Gift giving has always happened, and not just on christmas.

Now it's a consumerism holiday.

Then so is Valentine's Day, or Halloween. I could stay home and knit my daughter a sweater, but, I'd still have to buy the yarn and needles. It's a lot easier to go to the store, where someone else already made the sweater for me. Christmas is a good thing for business because so many people celebrate it.
