Africans, staying in place for those thousands of years, never invented the wheel. When European explorers went to the interior of Africa, they found no wheels, and little to no advancement beyond the Stone Age.

Why?

Well, neither did the white man. It was invented by the Sumerians around 3500 BC. They are asking the same question about white folks.

Terrain may have a lot to do with it. The need is another. No need to travel if food and water are in abundance where they were.
Hauling goods for trade by boat instead of over land may have been more practical considering the geography of the area.
