Why do religions which worship benevolent deities only make people unhappy?

Shouldn't religions which worship 'good' deities be making people happy? Seems like when ever religious discussions take place there's anything but peace and love. And any discussion about peace and love is absent deities. Why is that?

I find the same things that can make some people happy make others unhappy.

How are religions any different?

* TV and internet make a lot of people happy, and disseminate good information to serve greater good; but some of the addictive abusive porn, viruses, garbage, sex extortion/bullying, online fraud and hacking, stalking to compel people to suicide, and trafficking of victims online are EXTREMELY damaging and crazy making.

* government and politics makes a LOT of people unhappy, causes wars, wastes billions of dollars on conflict, etc.

how are those any different from how religions are either used for good or abused for bad?

Aren't all things in life this way?

Where are you getting the perception/generalization that religions that worship a God make people unhappy?

Are you leaving out how many people THANK these faith based teachings for
* saving their lives
* saving their health
* saving their marriages
* saving their relations and family
* saving their sanity
* turning them from crime, addiction, or dangerous/unhealthy self-destructive patterns
* healing them of sickness in mind body spirit or relationships

What are you counting or not counting to come to your assessment?
Are you really being fair and including all things equally?

If people weren't miserable, they wouldn't need religion or any other kind of false hope.

:lol: I am extremely blessed, and extremely happy, the only time I am usually unhappy is when my baseball team loses. I am a Christian and if this is what miserable feels like all the time, then I want more of it.:D

Regardless of whether a lie hurts you or benefits you, doesn't change the fact its a lie.

Ignorance is bliss.

I'd like to think my spirit goes somewhere after I die but what proof do we have of that? Just wishful thinking. Sorry to be the one to tell you there is no santa but you came to the board.

Which religion are you talking about? Do you have evidence that proves that everyone who is a member of that religion is unhappy? Are you butt upset over the fact that the last few threads you set up to attack religion failed?

seems to me the folks showing up and making everyone unhappy are the atheists.....

Atheism is a religion, they preach that there is no gods, therefore they must be the most miserable people in the world, according to Delta, that is. :lol:

Maybe if we opened up some gathering spots where we can get together every week with our like minded friends. Go out after into heavily populated cities and try to recruit handing out flyers saying YOU DO KNOW GOD DOESN"T EXIST RIGHT? Meetings every Sunday at Noon. Get a tax break for it too. Our proceeds will go to helping people who need it and scientific research, fighting global warming and keeping god out of school. lobbying, etc.

But like you don't want to call gay marriage marriage, can we call them churches or do we have to call them some alternative name so not to offend churches?

Then you'll be screaming ITS NOT A RELIGION because you won't like it that we get the tax breaks BET you flip flop on that quick.

The claim that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. The happiness of credulity is a cheap and dangerous quality.

Atheism is correlated with better scientific literacy, lower poverty rates, higher literacy rates, higher average incomes, less violence, lower divorce rates, lower teen pregnancy rates, lower STD infection rates, lower crime rates and lower homicide rates. It correlates highly with the well-being of individuals and societies by almost every possible measure.

Studies on happiness outside of predominantly religious countries (eg. the United States) find little to no correlation between happiness and religious belief. This corresponds with evidence which shows social and community bonding, rather than spiritual engagement, explains why religious people report greater satisfaction with life. Atheists, by comparison, may also simply be unhappy with the level of distrust and persecution they receive from their compatriots.
