Why do they give mass murders three names?

The media is now referring to the mass murderer of Colorado as "James Eagan Holmes".

I've noticed that they do this a lot, such as "John Wayne Gacy" or other mass murderers...

I guess it's so all the other James Holmes out there won't be mistaken. "No, no, I'm James Michael Holmes... and I'm 62... and I don't even like Batman movies."
