Why does the state celebrate Christmas?

Christmas was declared a Federal Holiday in 1870 by US Grant and codified in the Federal Statutes.

Yes, but they even allowed prayer in schools back then, a clear violation of church and state.

Come to think of it, why do we have weekends? Doesn't the weekend have its roots in Mosaic law concerning the Sabbath? This is akin to putting the Ten Commandments in the court room, another clear violation of church and state.

I say the only answer is to work 24/7, like it was before the Mosaic law came to be.

I kinda like the tongue-in-cheek, but do you realize that the antithesis to our Revolution, the one called the French Revolution...was based on the insanity you suggest?

From the novel “Napoleon’ Pyramids,” by William Dietrich

April 13, 1798, was a Friday. But it was springtime in revolutionary Paris, meaning that under the Directory’s new calendar it was the twenty-forth day of the month of Germinal in the Year Six, and the next day of rest was still six days distant, not two.
Has any reform been more futile?

The Government’s arrogant discard of Christianity means that weeks have been extended to ten days instead of seven. The revision’s intent is to supplant the papal calendar with a uniform alternative of twelve months of thirty days each, based on the system of ancient Egypt.

Bibles themselves were torn up to make paper gun cartridges in the grim days of 1793, and now the biblical week has been guillotined, each month instead divided into three decades of ten days, with the year, with the year beginning at the autumn equinox and five to six holidays added to balance idealism with our solar orbit.

Not content with regimenting the calendar, the government has introduced a new metric system for weight and measure. There are even proposals for a new clock of precisely 100,000 seconds each day. Reason, reason!...The new calendar is the kind of logical idea imposed by clever people that completely ignores habit, emotion, and human nature and thus forecasts the Revolution’s doom.

Your colonial revolution was one of political independence. This one in France is about the very order of life. My God, a king guillotined! Thousands sent to slaughter! Wars unleashed on every French border! Atheism enshrined! Church lands seized, debts ignored, estates confiscated, rabbles armed, riots, anarchy, and tyranny!

In an era of separation of church and state, why on earth are those in Washington celebrating a holiday with the term "Christ" in it?

In fact, why do we get the day off as well?

Politics. Pandering. Overestimating the political pull of Jesus freaks.

Putting all religious connotations aside, TRADITION.

If you have issues with government-sanctioned holiday of Christmas, you must also have problems with Thanksgiving or Good Friday and Easter.

Or, for that matter, with the TRADITION of Valentine's Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Columbus Day, President's Day etc. time honored customs, which can be opposed only by the professional nay-sayers and complainers.

A TRADITION indicates lasting values, worthy to be established and honored.

So much misinformation in one post.

Easter and Good Friday are NOT Federally recognized holidays.

Blessed Children know was Christmas is all about but I pity the children of liberal parents because they have have lost their imagination and magic, they're simply automatons of government and special interest groups.

.... and of course they're frustrated that they can't figure out how to get someone else to pay for their childrens presents..

Ah yes.. to be liberal and and looking for a reason to be a selfish bastard at Christmas..

indeed...the very same French that came to the defense of Liberty in America, Embraced Socialism at this point in history.

Well done.

Prayers in Government are not a violation of church and state. This is why we have the Chaplin opening prayer everyday before congress starts it's business day.
The Government is not suppose to promote any one type of Christian denomination or any other type of religion.
Not no religion in Government what so ever.
Getting religion out our of Government is a violation of our Constitutional rights.

Because Christians are persecuted in the US.

Why do you think? Play the devils advocate for a few minutes. Try hard to be honest and thoughtful. Why would someone like me.....raised in a traditional Catholic family....be disillusioned with organized religion as it has presented itself in America over the past 40 years?

Shock me.

Seriously. You want to fuck with Christians and Muslims over JC?

Are you really that screwed up?

The Christmas Season is grandfathered in by Tradition.

Tradition is pretty important to the country, particularly since what are now Traditions, were Real Life during the times that our forefathers built a society that surpasses any previously established on the Earth.

I would say that the "In God We Trust" on the Money qualifies there too. It seems like a more likely violation than a lot of the other stuff you Easily Offended Assholes like to whine about.

Why don't you EOAs go after the Money. While away you time getting God off the money.

So long as there are Christians in the world, there is the risk of the religious right forcing us to obey God. Next thing you know ONLY men and women will be marrying and forced to raise their children. People will stop doing illicit drugs. Those in Wall Street may even stop raping us blind.

Is this the world you want us to live in?

Sicko.

Try again. You failed to make sense.

If your employer is giving you the day off, it's probably because they don't believe the cost of operating for the day is worth the potential for profit.
