BUT there will be MORE cops, not fewer, in the coming decades.

Ya, so what is the lefty approach? What is the right approach? All of a sudden they put on a police hat and are saints? You believe that I sure as hell don't. Funding matters to a point but it feels as though our return on investment in cops and schools both all of a sudden ain't so good. The only place I feel as though I get a good return on my tax dollars these days is my fishing license. 93 percent goes straight to the hatchery.
