The written essay was introduced around 15 years ago to help black students. Blacks do abysmally on the math and verbal sections (which are multiple choice and have definite right answers) and the hope was that the graders of the essay would recognize black writing styles and award them extra points. Didn't work. For years the SAT has also employed affirmative action scoring on the math and verbal tests to help blacks but that is not working either since so many whites now list themselves as black to get the special treatment. What is the answer to black stupidity.? Should we go to college lotteries.?

The SAT college entrance exam will no longer require a written essay or penalize students for wrong answers, part of a major overhaul announced Wednesday.

The sweeping revisions were unveiled by David Coleman, president of the College Board, who also is the architect of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

The required essay never gained popularity with most college admissions officers, the Times noted, as few figure the score into admission decisions. And many used essays only occasionally as raw writing samples to help determine the degree to which parents, consultants and counselors had edited and polished essays submitted with applications.

The written essay was always a bad idea since grading it is a judgement call. A standardized test has to have clear cut right or wrong answers. Stick with multiple choice.
