17-Pound, 4-Month-Old Baby Denied Health Insurance for Being Too Fat

You guys realize that this insurance company is a Not-For-Profit insurer correct?

Unlike Blue Cross Blue Shield who is in it for profit.

Way to be misleading to try and push forward an administrations agenda guys, really i expected more out of some of you

About RMHP - Colorado Medical Insurance - Rocky Mountain Health Plan

http://www.rmhp.org/about_rmhp/community_involvement.aspx

:slap:

Not-for-profit doesn't mean they aren't in it for the money. For-profit companies may distribute their profits to their owners or shareholders, and they can also reinvest that profit into the business. Non-profits must invest all profits into the business. And that can include obscene salaries for their upper management and CEOs. Our "nonprofit" hospital CEO pulls down nearly $2.5 million a year.

And as far as Blue Cross goes:

Blue Cross: 501(m)

In the early 1980s, many commercial insurers began to challenge the fully tax-exempt status of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans. They brought their challenge to the IRS and to Congress. The national BCBS Association, a nonprofit organization that holds the BCBS trademark, went to great lengths to distinguish BCBS plans from commercial insurers by stressing their dedication to charitable, community-based health care services. As of January 1, 1987, the federal government removed the full tax-exempt status of BCBS plans and instead created a special tax class for BCBS organizations, Internal Revenue Code ("I.R.C.") 5833. The new I.R.C. category subjected BCBS plans to federal taxation but recognized the unique role BCBS plans play. Under I.R.C. 5833 the BCBS plans, unlike commercial for-profit insurers, are entitled to special tax benefits.

17-Pound, 4-Month-Old Baby Denied Health Insurance for Being Too Fat - Children's Health - FOXNews.com

But the sight of 4-month-old Alex Lange, who measures 25-inches long and weighs 17 pounds, is bringing a frown to the hypothetical face of insurance company Rocky Mountain Health Plans, The Denver Post reported on its Web site Monday.

Underwriters, the people who are in charge of assessing risk for insurance companies, have decided that baby Alex's pre-existing condition — obesity — makes him a high-risk patient and have denied him coverage

And it doesn't end there:

Bernie and Kelli Lange tried to get insurance with Rocky Mountain Health Plans when their current insurer raised their rates 40 percent after Alex was born.

After filling out the necessary paperwork, the broker who was helping the family find new insurance called last Thursday with the shocking news that Alex, who weighed 8 1/4-pounds at birth, was being denied coverage.

So who's still against Health Care Reform in general? Just wanted an update. Bueller? Bueller?

It might interest you to know that Rocky Mountain health systems is A not for profit company--that operates out of Grand Junction, CO. A "not for profit" company may have constraints on whom they allow into their system.

Colorado also has what they refer to as CARE--for people with pre-existing conditions to find afforable insurance rates.

Actually, the NBC station where baby's Dad is an anchor reported it. And it was picked up nationally in the media.

I guarantee you the person(s) who were involved in this were called on the carpet: "You denied WHO???"

If this was Great Britain the fat police would be called and the child taken away due to parental abuse!!! watch out Obama care is coming!!!! You dems said you want a program like they have in GB

That is not true.

I live in the UK and their National Health Service (NHS) sucks. I know this from personal experience. Their ERs are horrifying, despite what their government says people die on waiting lists, the system is expensive, incompetent, and generally crap BUT no one takes babies away from their parents.

I have private medical insurance in the UK because their system is so completely fucked up that I wouldn't let them treat my worst enemy.

If anyone thinks that a single payer system will fix what is broken, then you are wrong. It hasn't worked in any other country and it certainly won't work here.

This is not a GOP vs DNC issue and anyone who claims that the other side want people to die is a pathetic coward who doesn't want to address the real issues.

Everyone - all sides - agree that we need reform. The issue is what that reform will look like. Personally, having been in Europe for a few years, IF we were to go down this road, I would say we use France as an example.

If you think Government run health care won't be rationed you are a bigger fool then even I thought any of you were. THAT is exactly how those nations with socialist health care run their systems and we will do the same. You will be FORCED to pay for health care, fined if you do not, or should I say TAXED. You will find that only the right sort will get the real health care while the rest get long waits and denied expensive procedures. AND all the while the cost will keep CLIMBING. The Government has NEVER done anything that did not increase in cost every fucking year. Usually way past any increase the private sector endures.

But you dumb asses rush off to vote for Government run health care. Forget that it requires a damn Constitutional Amendment, much easier to just ignore the Constitution now adays anyway.

Surely there is public health in the US?

When I lived in the UK the NHS was pretty good. I know in some areas it was over run, but generally it was quite good.

I only know what the UK is like now. The system is collapsing. It was a great thing - and to a degree it still is but it is fucked. Their hospitals a gawd awful places, the system is rife with wastage, the nursing staff are underpaid and vastly overworked, they can't keep staff, people can't access the drugs they need, their GP system is a nightmare because there aren't enough doctors, there aren't enough beds.

Our system may suck big time, and there is no doubt it does, but you have a better chance of survival across the board than in the UK.

That's a pity.
I snapped my tibia/fibia playing football, and the hospital treatment I got was outstanding. Well, except when I went back to get my thigh-length plaster cut off so they could put a knee-length one on and they accidentally rebroke my leg, but that was the nurse rushing things.

Health and education are always going to be public black holes because you can't make money from them....

You're right, it will be rationed - Obama's own team have said so. The so called 'death panels' will exist - Obama's own team have said so. Abortion will be covered - Obama's own team have said so.

And, you're right - it is unconstitutional. When exactly did we become a nation of 'give me, give me, give me'? When did we forget who we are?

My daughter lived there for a while, and has nothing but praise for the care she and her boys received.

Emma, grow the fuck up. I am not wrong -I am right. Go read Dr Emanuels reseach on a national health care system for the US and then come back and tell me I'm wrong.

Oh, and I know this might be an alien concept for you (maybe you don't have a passport, maybe you've never ventured outside the borders of the US, I don't know) but..... Just because I don't happen to live in the US at the moment doesn't mean I don't care.... I'm not planning to be outside the US forever. Damn, you are seriously stupid.

Go ahead Emma provide for us the clause in the Constitution that authorizes the Government to run National Health Care, to tax for it and to pay for it. And if you claim there is a General welfare clause you will be wrong, that is NOT a granted power, it is a descriptive sentence used to identify why the GRANTED powers were given.

And I guess you missed where she is returning in 2010?

I'm not saying it's all bad. The Brits love it, and I can see why. But...... the 'mission creep' for their NHS is ridiculous.... If it was just about life saving health care, they would have no problem and the system would be fine. Problem is, they expanded it and now it is WAAAYYY out of control.

I'm not a supporter of any tax funded system in the US because I believe it is unconstitutional but if we are to go down this road, then the UK is not a good example. France, maybe.

While we're on the subject of the Constitution..... I might also add that, according to the SC, it will be unconstitutional NOT to cover illegal aliens. So,again, the Obama Administration lies about that. They know they will cover illegal aliens - they have to.

Emma clearly hasn't studied this in enough detail.

To anyone who is actually interested, I would recommend that, instead of listening to the media, you go and get hold of Dr Ezekiel Emanual's own research and recommendations. It's all there - in black and white - in his own words.

1. It's already rationed. It will ALWAYS be rationed. No matter what system we have. Healthcare is not an infinite resource. So don't even try those failed scare tactics and attempt to pin the blame on the current (or ANY) administration.

2. Death panels are a figment of the right's fevered mind.

3. Abortion will not be covered. No one is brave enough to risk that one.

4. It is not unconstitutional. HHS is a Constitutionally created department of the Executive, and healthcare falls directly within their purview as expressed in their mission. Therefore, according to what is explicitly stated in Article I, sections 8 and 9, Congress has the Constitutional authority to pass these laws and regulations.
