OK..OK...OK I feel so stupid.

Don't feel stupid, Huggy. I don't know the biological name of the damned flower, but it's not the only one on the planet and not the first picture I've seen of one in bloom. As a matter of fact, if memory serves, there was one featured in the old "Dennis the Menace" movie with Walter Mathau as the long suffering next door neighbor. There is an incredibly long time between blooms. If you take a hard look at the OP's original flower, it's got a "fence" or other bamboo looking thing around it that sort of makes it look potted ... and it's not in bloom. The following pictures DON'T have the same "potted" look and the plant is in bloom. It's a series of pictures of varying states of bloom. Clearly, the OP is trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. I seriously doubt God is trying to tell New Yorkers something.

If it's any consolation ... the damned first picture DOES look a bit like an ear of corn.
