Am I the only one who supported the soda ban?

"Reuters is reporting that obesity in America is now adding an astounding $190 billion to the annual national healthcare price tag, exceeding smoking as public health enemy number one when it comes to cost."

Americans consume approximately 47 billion lbs of sugar a year. How about a tax of $4.00 / lb on refined sugar to cover the costs of the health care bill? If such an action forces manufacturers of products containing sugar to switch to lower cost and lower calorie alternatives like saccharin, that's great.

I'm telling 'ya, it's getting trendy to be a disgusting fat-ass. Sally Struthers was just ahead of her time!

Let's face it. Some people can't handle themselves. The idea of personal freedom is not the bigger picture. The bigger picture is for the greater good. With all of the health problems that obesity causes, it needs to be curbed. Afflictions like diabetes are a drain on the economy with the health care cost associated with it. Sure this policy would have only made a small dent, but it is a start.

New Yorkers can still live happy fulfilling lives without buying an extra large soda

The greater good is irrelevant.

It's the camel's nose under the tent.

The next thing you know you'll be mandated to eat so many lbs of broccoli a year or else be fined.

It's none of your business what someone else eats, drinks, smokes etc.

I support a soda ban for anyone over the age of 21

Nothing as disgusting as watching an adult wolf down a 32 oz Mountain Dew like some acne incrusted teenager. You are an adult for christ sake. Drink adult beverages

You want to drink soda, put some booze in it

Looks like you need a Breathalyzer on your PC, trollboy.

The hallmark of a socialist liberal, is their belief that personal freedom does NOT lead to "the greater good".

The Great American Experiment, embarked on in 1776 and 1789 by the Americans of that time, was based on exactly the opposite belief, of course: The idea that if people are left free to do what they want, sink or swim by their own efforts, learn from their mistakes, and help each other, they could achieve more "greater good" for the society than if government were to step in and make decisions for them, direct their lives, etc. Today that idea is called "conservatism".

Now we are infested with people who have given up on that American ideal, if they ever believed it in the first place. These socialist liberals are determined to tear it down and impose government in its place, government to "help" us with the ordinary problems in life from cradle to grave.

Never mind that the only thing government is capable of, is punishing people, restricting them, and taking from them. These socialist liberals actually believe that government can make a society BETTER.

The idea that government's only function, is to keep people from destroying other Americans' freedoms, is alien to them. They are sure they know better, and won't stop until they have imposed maximum government on us all... whether we like it or not.

But the cost of their health care to the taxpayer is the entire point. You just can't figure that out.
Simple answer, Quit paying for peoples health care. If they want an unhealthy lifestyle. let them die. It's their choice and one of the and their personal responsibility to pay for their own health care.

How about a new tax? A "sugar tax". What if society taxed food products based on their sugar content? Consider just soft drinks. A sugar tax would make diet soft drinks which contain 0 calories less expensive for the consumer to purchase than their sugar laden alternatives. Hopefully the tax would discourage the purchase of sugary foods and beverages, and the proceeds from the tax would go into the government fund that pays for health care, including diabetes.

You do know that would spike the price of fruit & fruit juice, right?

Yeah, but that was still a bit much.

I’m all for good health, but I think this was a bit intense. First, it unfairly affected certain businesses who are already struggling in the face of this shaky economy (what if that was you?). Second, I think it’s silly that the government is regulating soda size; at some point we really just need to be responsible for our own decisions.

The government doesn't have to do everything for us.

Fruit juice is bad for you, compared to whole fruit. So whole fruit would be exempted from the tax.

Next on the agenda is Aids. Nothing that a jar of Vaseline and a box of Kleenex won't cure and contain. Gay Sex should be the next ban, nothing will contain the AIDS epidemic quicker. Hey, maybe Bloomberg is on to something, after all. Your vibrator is in the mail Billy. ;)

You're not a right wing Republican? Sorry if I'm wrong.

Good one, thanks for the laugh. Most of the Women I know are stronger Pro Life than I am. Yes, I prefer to have some say in how my Tax money is spent. Don't you? Is something wrong here? Is it only wrong when you disagree with the end? Any Name you call God by, even the words you use when you pray, is between you and Him. You know that, right? You should. You sure like to suppose and point fingers. ;)

If that's the case, I have plenty of company here. Glad I was noticed amongst the many!
