Fun fact: More Americans get struck by lightning, than get killed by ISIS.
BRAIN DEAD TRANSLATION: About 400 people get hit by lightning in the USA every year, so that makes traveling unprotected in Tajikistan on 13 pounds of metal "safe."
The lightest steel bikes (road) weigh in at around 20 lbs. You can get it down to around 15 lbs, but then you have to make the frame out of carbon fiber.
Regular cyclocross or mountain bikes (probably what was used) generally run around 25 to 30 lbs.
Huffy bicycles that you buy in Wal Mart are around 45 to 60 lbs.
I know all this because I've been an avid cyclist since '86.
