Reads to me like the attackers didn't even know the victim.

If that is the case, unless the victim was very obviously gay, then the gay slur preceding the attack was probably just a run of the mill insult on a man rather than a description of why the guy was attacked.

When gangs of teen boys attack people at random, the term fag or queer is often used. If it's a women she's a slut bitch etc...all these names are meaningless insults and nothing more.

These punks do know or care if their target is really gay, they're just hurting people for fun and part of their MO is to call people names as they gang bang them.

So was it really a hate crime?

Of course it is, it is just might not (really) be a gay hate crime.
