anybody play chess

i play chess on my computer at night sometimes when i get bored with reading...

no interest in playing on-line however...
I find actual people to be a bit more challenging. You can learn to work the computer.
You are right. To play a great game of chess you have to play your own game. You cannot play the other guy. It has to be your game and you have to stay the course with that mindset.

Two men are standing in front of a painting called Checkmate in an art gallery. In the painting, a man is playing chess with the devil. The devil is grinning ear-to-ear because he has the man cornered. The title of the painting, “Checkmate,” indicates that the game is over. The devil has won. His opponent has no more moves.

The first man looking at the painting wants to move on to other paintings in the gallery. But the second man, an international chess champion, wants to look at the painting longer, so he waves his friend on and tells him he will catch up later. The chess champion stares and stares at the chess board, then suddenly he steps back, flabbergasted.

“It’s wrong!” he exclaims. “There’s one more move.”

He runs to his friend and together they look at the painting.

“We have to contact the painter,” the chess champion says. “It’s not checkmate. The King has one more move!”

My average is/was higher than that. I lost about 15 games to timeout a couple months ago. I cant even join half the tournaments now :(

Buy a roll up board (cloth) with algaebraic notation on it. Get the Staunton style chess pieces as that is what the chess federation players use. Then memorize the board. You can practice by playing chess over the telephone using algebraic notation. It's very good exercise for your memory and to get into the practice of seeing the board without looking at it.

I used to practiced this years ago but I cannot go farther after 12 moves and it gives me headaches.

I am not the greatest but I love to play!
Any challenges?

Both of my parents was a chess fanatics so we learned to play chess at early ages and so is the rest of my clan play chess. I used to play on line but it's boring and tied me up every time. Preferably I like to play live person if possible. So I only play with my computer or my cellphone.
We will be celebrating our Christmas and New Year in Las Vegas this year in time of a chess tournament that will be held at Ballys Casino. That's the CCA tournament Dec. 26 to 30 25th North American Open. I will not be competing in this tournament but my son is. When a player got eliminated I offer money to play against me. Pay them by the hour and normally a player rated at 2300 or up....
My sports are basketball, tennis, golf, chess, yachting and racing. But sex is the priority.

This is for TNharley.....Anybody else play chess? I only counted 5. COME ON this is a very interesting game of brain which involved intelligence, logistics, concentration, strategy, memory test. And helps avoid Alzheimer's.

Used to. Haven't for a while. Tried getting into 'Go' or Chinese Chess recently, got a freeware prog to play but it's hard. Super easy to start, but as you rapidly discover at least against a computer it's subtle and really hard. :)

I think you have to have a certain type of brain to play chess. I can not keep track of moves, meaning, if I think of an option, and chain of event of moves, I'll forget the first 2 thinking about the 3rd and 4th if that makes sense.

Maybe it has something to do with having a photographic memory (being able to visualize, capture and recall images...)?

Or maybe I'm just a moron!!!

Can have any kind of brain to play chess. But to be good at it requires one be paranoid (according to Bobby Fischer.) :)

Nope you have to be able to remember moves in your head.

But I tend to be lazy if it requires too much effort and work I lose interest.
I like to participate in activities I'm naturally good at and build from there....

After getting my butt kicked a while by a chess computer, I'll set it the very easiet so as not to get overly discouraged. Works great. :)

Great scene from "The West Wing" about chess. :)

"BARTLET
Sixteenth century. He'd go to the human chess matches at the Mogul Court of
Emperor Akbar,
and that began the family obsession with the game. Wanna play?

SAM
You?

BARTLET
Yeah.

SAM
I'll get killed.

BARTLET
Why?

Bartlet picks up a black piece and a white piece and holds them behind his
back.

SAM
You're a Grand Wizard or a Grandmaster or something.

BARTLET
No, I'm none of those things. I'm just grand.

He holds out both hands in fists, and Sam taps the right with a finger.

BARTLET
[opening his hand] You're white, but don't ever touch me.

SAM
I'm sorry, sir.

BARTLET
I was kidding.

He spins the board on the desk so the black pieces are at his end. Sam
deliberates for a moment,
then moves a pawn (d2-d3).

BARTLET
Ah, the Fibonacci opening. Very interesting.

SAM
You're just gonna mess with me this whole time, right?

BARTLET
Yeah.

Bartlet moves a pawn (e7-e5)."

Helps to see it from the epi but couldn't find it. :(

(whew) saw a reply from you and thought, "Oh god, gonna say it's demonic or something." :)

Strategy is a big deal; IE remembering your moves. At least in the "middle" and "end" game.
On that website I mentioned, you can have multiple (some have hundreds!) online games with users all over the world. If you have 30 games going on, you wont remember everything. They have a notes section but I don't ever seem to remember it at the time.

I used to think my biggest slack was openings. Then, as I progressed, I realized openings don't mean much.. and I was nowhere near as good as i thought(I have been playing for years) Look at Magnus Carlson for the latest evidence.

I'm a card game person - poker, bridge, spades, hearts if not card games, then, single player games like Zuma or Poppit! LOL It's been a long time since I have played any of those however.... my spare time now is spent here..... if not working etc.
