Sure. It began as a pushback against the church and its presuppositions.

More like a push back against some of the catholic churches dogmatic thinking such as:

1) The Earth is the center of the universe(Astronomy)
2)Plague is caused by demons(chemistry/biology)
3)The Pope is infallible(Theology).

In fact, 3 does not need a naturalistic presupposition.
