My purpose seems to be to make things better, whatever I do. The world is falling apart. We need more maintenance people.

Yet none of those things were in the Garden of Eden. Why would a Father give his own child cancer? The things you described come from Satan, not God. He goes to and fro upon the earth distributing pain.

Satan has control of this earth for a time. Adam handed it over to Him. Look at what Satan tempted Christ with in the desert. Satan could offer those things because Satan has dominion over all those things. Christ is coming back to put an end to Satan's reign upon the earth and bring peace to us.
And considering we are about to nearly obliterate life on this planet in the upcoming war, peace will be a welcome relief. Bring it Christ. Maranatha.

God didn't give dominion over to Satan because He didn't have dominion over the earth. He gave the title to Adam:

Gen.1:26-31. And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

And being 100% just, God had to honor it. But dominion came with a time limit. We are there.

The earth was originally created for the pleasure of the angels.

Job 38
6 Whereupon are the foundations (of the earth) thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

It was their 'estate' and 'habitation'. (Jude 6).

"And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day."

Lucifer sought to elevate his earthly throne over all the angels. He ascended to the third heaven and attempted to do just that. He wanted to be equal to God. He was cast back to earth but retained 'lordship' over it, for the time being. He will be deposed when Christ returns as Lord of all.
