They figured that demographics were now permanently on their side, and that it was going to be smooth sailing from here on in.

What they underestimated was the size and intensity of the pushback against the PC and Identity Politics that they have been shoving down the throats of Americans for so long. More than likely, Trump will have been the final primal scream against the authoritarianism that's coming, a loud, last gasp.
