“A lot of people have came to Baltimore and walked through Sandtown within the last eight months, but that doesn’t make a difference. People will still be poor in Sandtown when Bernie leaves," Rose said.

Of course they will. If you're sitting around waiting for the government to fix your problems you're going to be sitting around the rest of your life. Change starts with the people in the community. They're the ones who need to make the change for the better and start improving their community. It won't come from D.C. or Annapolis.

I'm reminded of news footage of flood-ravaged peasants last spring in the Swat Valley in Pakistan, crying, wailing and demanding that someone come save them.

There are no guarantees. Save yourself and yours.

Here in the US there are two base problems - lack of education and a lack of ownership in the community.

Both require a willingness to participate to the point of pain and sweat, and I honestly don't know if that can be taught outside the home, but even the lazy and the stupid can find something productive to do, given the right incentives and assistance that understands the parable of teaching a man to fish over giving him a meal.

People have to fix their own problems and teach their children to be civilized before anything can be done.

Government has a place of course but not until the people in these areas do something.

Just what the hell do you mean "be civilized".

You are one overt moronic bigot.

Stop blowing away each other and learn to value education + hard work. You're the moronic piece of shit that wants to turn us into the isis or somalia. lol.

Civilized is simply learning to value life and to work together to bring society upwards.

You keep laughing, but I can't tell at what.

Please show me where I want to turn us into Isis or Somalia.

You make all these stupid assertions...and that really does not describe anything like civilization......I can see why you value the education you'll get one day.

Socio-economics is a complex subject that involves politics, sociology, and the nature vs nurture debate. Self-reliance certainly plays a huge role, but you are oversimplifying the matter by saying it's the cure-all. "Pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" sounds good and certainly practical of course, but the solution to poverty is more complex than that.

Are you saying that the lack of ownership is from not buying the right auto?

Oh? Are you saying the Democrat "War on Poverty" is a 50 year Failure?

The GOP joined the war also, as no GOP majority led government at the federal level has ever dissolved the welfare state...

Yes it's obviously a failure. Who declared that war? Christ does it even matter? Why should anyone give a shit about some political play 50 years ago? I don't give a shit what any conservative president said 50 years ago either.

Because the war on poverty has pissed through over 5 trillion dollars and the end result is even more people in poverty than when it was started. Maybe just throwing money at people doesn't work...

Actually it boils down to two very simple concepts, being taught the proper values when you're young and making good decisions in accordance with those values as you get older. That's all it takes to get ahead in this country.

There are changes coming, just check out what the way and means committee is working on. Actually you may not be able to just yet, I'm not sure it's been made public yet.

Ok so what has this 5 trillion been spent on? Welfare? I don't know of any democrat today who says welfare "fixes" poverty. Welfare is meant as a safety net for those who truly need it. The most poor among us. What I find hilarious is that you people bitch about welfare and insist that democrats want people to stay on it but don't seem to make the connection with the issue of raising the minimum wage. If democrats were successful in raising the minimum wage, MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WOULD NO LONGER QUALIFY FOR WELFARE PROGRAMS LIKE FOOD STAMPS. it's so laughable you people don't see how those issues connect. No one actually believes food stamps will fix poverty. That isn't the point of it. It's there as an unfortunate safety net for the shocking wages poor people are on.

Raising the minimum wage is the ONLY way to lift people out of poverty. No liberal believes otherwise. Why is it the only way? Because wages in both the middle class and poor have been flat for DECADES while corporate profits only climb. What is the incentive for the private market to raise wages on its own when business owners can maximize profit by keeping them low?

I agree, but we're talking about BS and the current President... I guess we could forget about Hillary, BS and Obama and just get in a time machine and bitch about Bush like all damn day.
