Uncle Tom and black unemployment: Free passes only for some
By Chad Groening, OneNewsNow.com May 2, 2014 12:25 pm
Bennie Thompson, A black conservative is outraged that a black congressman is doubling down on his racial remarks about U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
During an interview with CNN, Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson stood by a statement he made over the weekend, that Justice Clarence Thomas is an "Uncle Tom" who doesn't stand up for black Americans.
"Uncle Tom" is a slur toward blacks who are perceived to be subservient to whites.
He also continued to suggest that U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell opposes President Obama because he is black.
Thompson made the remarks to a Nation of Islam radio show in which he claimed opposition to Obama stems from racism because he is black.
Kevin Martin, a member of the conservative Project 21 black leadership network, says Thompson is still upset that a black conservative is sitting on the Supreme Court.
Martin recalls that a black congressman once candidly remarked that blacks would be marching around the White House, if President Obama was white, over unemployment in the black community.
"So why does this guy get a free pass from you and yet Clarence Thomas, who is a judge who is supposed to rule on the merits of the law and not include personal feelings in it – why does he get castigated but President Obama gets a free pass," Martin complains.
Thompson represents the 2nd Congressional District in Mississippi, which includes the Mississippi Delta and is one of the poorest districts in the country.
In a CNN interview (see above), Thompson was pressed by reporter Dana Bash that "Uncle Tom" could be viewed as a racist remark.
"But I'm black," Thompson replied.
"That makes it OK?" Bash responded.
