Trump’s own Treasury Department in May found that no country meets the criteria of being labeled a currency manipulator, although the report did put China and eight other countries on a watch list.

Trump says US should start manipulating the dollar

I find that odd, because I have been hearing for decades that China IS and HAS BEEN manipulating it's currency.

This is why I believe most of the "news" is bullshit, regardless of the source. Now that Trump has suggested doing so, it's yet another outlandish idea or issue with no reason to actually act and do anything about it. Next thing you know, Trump is going to announce a new "Star Wars" program and the "news" will be insisting every other country on earth is downsizing it's missile stocks and China doesn't actually have nuclear weapons it can reliably deliver to targets in the US.

What a shit show.

Last week before Occasional Cortex went to the border, you might have thought no one was actually trying to get in illegally.

China can wait out any "trade war " with the United States.

Oh, that is not true at all. We could halt all trade with China and they would collapse in short order.

That dude was wrong on China being the biggest economy.

China cannot afford to fall below 5% growth.

Most of China's economy is heavily dependent on exports, which is heavily reliant on the U.S.

We have way more leverage than any of our political leaders will dare to admit.

.

Fight fire with fire. China and it's global socialist patsies and many foreign government who want to usurp the U.S can go f themselves. Stand up to China and make sure their economy stalls and/or goes into a recession. Anyone who says "but that will hurt America" hasn't seen the trade imbalance.

China needs America, even as it attacks her, spies on her, steals from her and tries to humiliate her. America and the rest of the world must fight back, these communists want to control the world and our lives.

Much of China's GDP is vaporware, a bare majority is real. there have been empty buildings and towns that have not been foreclosed after decades in default. sort of like CA but with less scenery.

China has never been officially declared one by the US, even though Trump promised to do so on day one of his administration.

Well that's true, that China has been manipulating it's currency, by pegging it to the dollar. That is in fact currency manipulation.

The problem with Trump, and anyone with this idea, is that again... China's currency is pegged to the dollar. If we change the value of the dollar, then China's currency changes in value with it. Meaning nothing will change.

It's like saying I'm manipulating the speed of my car.... by pegging my speed (matching) to the speed of your car.

If you change speeds, that will do nothing, because I'll just match it, and nothing will change.

So while Trump is actually correct, his solution is ignorant. We could manipulate until the end of time, and their currency would still match ours.... unless of course we destroyed our currency, in which case the Chinese would ditch us.... but that would hurt us far more than them.

It sounds like both currencies would be stabilized if they were pegged to each other.

Might not be a bad idea.

Some of you financial guys tell me where I am wrong.

Do not know that he has given one, I think he just pretends he never said it.

My guess would be that he lied again.

Well, yes and no.

Once the Yuan is pegged to the Dollar, then the dollar is by default, pegged to the Yuan. Because whatever change in value there is for the dollar, would automatically change the value of the Yuan to match.

What I mean is this... The Chinese have pegged the Yuan to about 15¢. Or a little less than 7 Yuan to a dollar.

If the dollar drops in value, the Yuan is still 15¢. If the dollar goes up in value, the Yuan is still 15¢.

So saying we're going to peg the dollar to the Yuan is pointless... because it already is.

To say the pegging the dollar to yuan will stabilize the dollar is impossible, because the value the dollar can change dramatically, and Yuan would change with it.

To give an analogy, it's like having 2 boats out on the ocean adrift, and saying if you tie your boat to mine, and I tie my boat to yours, then we'll be anchored together.

That doesn't work, we're still adrift, just tied together adrift.

In order to stabilize a currency, you have to anchor it to something, like an asset that has a stable value. Unfortunately, because of how inter-dependent economies are, it would be impossible to go back to a gold standard. It will never work.

Yawn...
The BRICS have been discussing this for over 10 years...and nothing.

Brazil is doing OK with its own version of Trump, Russia has a ridiculously low population density that is declining, India and South Africa are neck and neck for the most racist nation in the world but China is heading for another warring state period as usual.

India, land of 9,000,000,000,000 Best & Brightest, has massive graduate unemployment thanks to Trump clamping down on Business Visas.
Gee, can’t India start their own corporations without raping our job market?
