Colts owner Jim Irsay charged with DWI, four felony counts of possession

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay has been arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving and possession of a controlled substance. He faces a preliminary misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated and four felony counts of possession of a controlled substance.

According to Hamilton County (Ind.) police, Irsay was arrested in the Indianapolis suburb of Carmel at about 3 a.m. ET. Irsay was observed stopping in the middle of the road and failed to signal when pulling over.

"During the course of the investigation, Irsay subsequently failed several roadside field sobriety tests," police said in a statement.

Several Schedule IV bottles of prescription medication were found in Irsay's car. "Multiple prescription drugs were discovered in pill bottles," police said. "These Schedule IV prescription drugs were not associated with any prescription bottles found in the vehicle." Irsay was detained, with bail set at $22,500.

“We are gathering information at this time regarding last night’s incident involving Jim Irsay," the Indianapolis Colts said in a statement. "The team will issue additional statements when the facts are sorted and we are aware of the next steps to this process. Many fans have reached out to express their concern and we appreciate their support.”

As recently as last October, Irsay proclaimed 15 years of sobriety in an angry response to critics on Twitter:

At the time, Irsay was gloating over the Colts' 39-33 victory over the Denver Broncos in Peyton Manning's storied return to Indianapolis.

Irsay is 100 percent owner of the Colts, a franchise valued by Forbes as the 11th most valuable in the league at $1.6 billion.

The NFL has been trying to get a handle on drinking and driving, but has primarily focused its efforts on players, particularly in the wake of the death of the Cowboys' Jerry Brown in an accident caused by intoxicated teammate Josh Brent. The NFL and Uber announced a partnership at the start of 2013 to provide players with safe rides home.
