It's not just California either, there are other high-taxed states that are also losing their citizens, also known as your tax base. The latest US Census data reveals that New York’s middle class is departing the city at a rate not seen since the Great Depression, the worst economic downturn in the industrialized world that stretched from 1929 to 1939. Other big growth states include Colorado, Nevada, North Carolina, South Carolina and Arizona. Beyond low taxes, people are lured to these states by the good weather and relatively affordable housing.

Along with Nevada, another state experiencing a mass influx of migration, Texas and Florida don’t have a state income tax. This alone tempts thousands of people to make their move, as state income taxes in places such as California, New York, Minnesota and New Jersey can bludgeon your personal finances.

What states are Americans leaving in droves?
New York state leads the country in net domestic migration, and Illinois and New Jersey aren’t too far behind, as they have experienced a demographic hemorrhaging that is beginning to weigh on their population statistics.

These states have a lot in common: sky-high taxes, housing prices that are completely out of reach for normal folks and dreadful weather.

Although it has spectacular weather, California has lost more than 3 million of its own residents to migration since 1990. In fact, California has so many exiles that they’re often blamed for inflating housing prices in nearby states such as Oregon and Arizona.
