#1) If there is no cure for the common cold because the virus mutates so often and COVID-19 is a deadly form of a common cold then how is social distancing and locking down helpful? There is no cure or vaccine for a common cold.

#2) Is there a way to cure the common cold but drug companies and companies that sell tissues and such make more from maintenance and treatments, after all common colds rarely killed people in the past. So there was not much effort put into researching the cure. In which case we can get a vaccine and or cure and lockdowns do make sense.

So which is it? #1 or #2?

Because COVID-19 is not the common cold (which is contagious and an inconvenience, but it it won't kill you), nor the flu (which could possibly kill you but probably not) which has a vaccine for it. So neither of your choices are really valid. What are you trying to rationalize here? Is it just the issue of lockdown/stay at home? The virus has so far proven to be highly contagious with a high mortality rate. Courses of treatment at this point consist of highly educated guesses. A vaccine may or may not be possible. The only thing that can be done in the meantime is further research and continued practicing of those behaviors which limit the spread of the virus.

I am trying to gauge if there was always a possibility to cure the common cold and we never looked for a cure because maintenance was more profitable? COVID-19 is a form of a cold, yes?

Suspect you are right on point #2 in relation to cost benefit of curing the common cold at this point, as it rarely becomes a life threatening issue, even in the 60 and up crowd, and the second half of my typical run on sentence, (never met a comma I didn't like) explains why we do not lock down for colds, due to not generally developing into life threatening situations, even for the old. I'm out Zog before that Rock Tory guy come in and starts beating the shit outa me on grammer, sentence structure, punctuation, word usage, etc.

Given that the mortality rate for the common cold is almost nothing, I would think that it would be a waste of resources to try and cure it. No COVID-19 is not in the form of a common cold...or the flu.
Here’s Why COVID-19 Is Much Worse Than the Flu

The World Health Organizations says: "Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). The most recently discovered coronavirus causes coronavirus disease COVID-19."

pretty shitty start for a thread.
Wow you are so delusional because you believe your opinion matters.
USMB. where your voices count, unless you point out the errors in the very highly intelligent superbrat's brain fart OP.

tell the class which pathogens cause the common cold, provide evidence about the mutation rate of human coronaviruses, and generally read up on the subject, perfessor.

Wuhan virus is the same type of virus as the common cold. There is and never has been either a cure or a vaccine for the common cold. What makes them think they can make an effective vaccine for Wuhan?
As for lockdowns, my wife and I both caught colds during this lockdown.

You are making my point!!! Unless there is a way to find a cure for the common cold and we haven't bothered because industries can make more money treating it vs. curing it.

Granny of the Beverly Hillbillies created a cure for the common cold. It was on one of the episodes.
She said to take a teaspoon of her elixir twice a day, get plenty of rest and eat well and you’ll be cured of that cold in about two weeks. ;)

Nothing of value from you as usual. reduced to trolling his own thread because he cannot defend his OP.

Defend? I have to defend an opinion? You're a clown.

No it's not the common cold. The common cold is an inconvenience. It's also contagious in a close quartered environment....but it won't kill you. And I don't know if they can develop a vaccine for COVID-19 or not. Remains to be seen.

Is it closer to a cold or a flu or none of the above?
