Over the past 40+ years, China has moved more people out of poverty than in the entire history of the rest of the world combined.

China has made enormous gains in wealth though, in the 1970's China was poorer than Africa, now that's far from true.

As to why China was so poor, they were isolationists unlike Japan which industrialized early.

As I bought up earlier, while the average Chinese person is smarter than the average White person, the Chinese elite hasn't been particularly innovative.
