Geez...I didn't realize that we absorbed Kosovo and then tried to establish US dominion over the region....like Putin is trying to re-constitute a totalitarian state like the Soviet Union..by re-taking the nations freed by it's collapse....starting w Ukraine; then Georgia, Latvia, Moldova...hm...maybe put that wall back up to cut East Germany off...
He's like the Borg: "u will be absorbed...resistance is futile"...

Since 1989, Kosovo had suffered from ethnic cleansing by the government in Belgrade. This intensified in the late 1990s, particular in 1998 when hundreds of thousands of people in Kosovo were forced to flee their homes by Serbian security forces. This led to near humanitarian disasters as people froze and starved in the mountains while fleeing in fear of Serbian security forces. After much diplomacy and the deaths and displacement of thousands of people in Kosovo, NATO warned Belgrade that Serbian security forces must leave Kosovo or face military action. Belgrade then launched operation horseshoe which was the forced mass deportation of all ethnic Albanians in Kosovo out of the country and the confiscation of all their property. Over ten thousand Ethnic Albanians died during this operation and over a million ethnic Albanians were forced into neighboring Albania. NATO bombing of Serb security forces and the government in Belgrade finally brought this ethnic cleansing and genocide to a halt. NATO troops moved into Kosovo and Serb troops left in the summer of 1999 From 1999 to 2008, NATO tried to work out the differences between the Kosovar Albanians and Serbs in Belgrade, but was unsuccessful. Kosovo declared its independence in 2008 and NATO did not prevent this. Gradually, most countries on the planet have recognized KOSOVO as an independent state because it was the only solution given the gross genocide and ethnic cleansing Kosovo had suffered at the hands of the Serbs. 108 countries have recognized Kosovo's independence from Serbia and more countries join that list every year.

In contrast, no one in Crimea had been ethnically cleansed and Crimea voted in 1991 for Ukrainian independence from Moscow. Russia invaded Crimea because its stooge in Kiev had been overthrown. The invasion and annexation of Crimea is exactly the same thing Hitler did to Austria and Czechoslovakia in 1936 and 1938 respectively!

It is criminally illegal and shows that Putin believes in military power as a tool to get what he wants just as Saddam and Hitler believed and use military power to get what they wanted.

They both have large Muslim populations.
