Sometimes, that perception cuts to the core. Like when President George W. Bush stopped playing golf in 2003, at the height of the Iraq War.

That way, the hundreds of people revolving around him at all times — White House staff, Secret Service agents, reporters, photographers, all the others — could spend the holiday with their families in and around Washington, D.C. No one ever reported that — until this column.

Second, he rarely attended sporting events, although he once owned a baseball team and was a self-confessed stats junkie. His thinking there was the same: If he went to a baseball game (right down the street from the White House), his mere presence would mean hours and hours of extra security for fans. He once stopped off at the Daytona 500 and the metal detectors through which every fan had to pass left thousands outside in line when the green flag fell; he didn’t attend many sporting events after that.

I think George Bush was a more humble man than some people gave him credit for, but I'm not sure what that has to do with Obama. Maybe Presidents could enjoy themselves without "sending the wrong message" if media outlets would stop reporting so many of these non-stories.

A raciest is someone who sees any critique of one's character, choices, or behavior, as slighting one's race, as well as, those who would make fun of one's skin tone or lack of one. People are not suggesting Obama should not take a vacation, but then Obama makes 400 thousand a year. And when he spends more than that on a vacation for himself, and one for his wife and sends his children to privite school, it becomes obvious that Obama is spending more than just HIS money... And this is at a time when Americans generally are being asked to cut back and live within a budget this is seen as setting a bad example. So just get over it.
