The weakening has gone fro 5% per century to 5% per DECADE. We dont have firm evidence to make a prediction since we have not recorded such an event before, but it seems that the Earths magnetic field could reverse in the near future. This could involve a period in which we have no magnetic field at all.

There is little need for our generation to panic, but it might be a good time to prepare for the eventual lack of a magnetic field.

It will merely flip just like it has many times before. Be kind of cool to watch the compass needles flip!

Well hopefully it will flip quickly, but no one knows how long that process will take while there is little if any magnetic field.

It is a safe assumption that the change is near instantaneous.

If only we would just all go green and embrace the new green deal. It's all because we don't have high speed electric rail service across the oceans, driving internal combustion cars and allowing cows to fart.

No seriously it has happened before. We have no evidence of mass extinction events that coincide with it so hopefully this time it will be fast enough flip that we do not have to worry. Will of course be a bit of a problem for some navigation.

This calls for socialism. It's the only way.

Ummm...I am going to need a better source than an article on a blog called 'The Economic Collapse' that was based on a Forbes article that was based on a Quora post and/or a sci-fi author that supposedly quotes a NASA report that I cannot find.

But nonetheless still only an assumption.

But one based on the fact that we are still here. With no magnetic field to protect us, the cosmic radiation would end most life.

Hasn't happened before, so won't happen now.

Later in the article is states that a flip could take thousands of years which I have read before. But they really don't know as no one has ever recorded such an event.

There is no logical reason for the flip to take time Add to that the fact that there are no mass extinctions at any of the many other flips, and it is safe to assume it is a very quick flip.

We were living in caves during the last one, right? :D

But seriously, how will this affect our electrical grid and our electrical appliances, like computers? Any idea?

Like having an ionic air cleaner?

More like a blowtorch.

At a rate of 34 miles a year if current pole movement remained consistent to the south for the 13000 miles it would take approx 394 years.

With this magnetic flip will terlits flow counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere instead of how it does in the Southern?

Will the toilet flush reverse?
