Their efforts to pull down a monument of Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate suddenly stopped as four shots rang out. Most people instinctively turned toward the noise, videos from the scene show. A few screamed. Just yards away, a group of militia men sporting militarylike garb and carrying semiautomatic rifles formed a protective circle around the gunman.

Here is the video of this. It's not what the OP presented. Yes his militia buddies formed a circle around him but that's about it.

Read the POLICE REPORT. That's all the facts any of us need and it states EXACTLY what this thread says. He was BACKING AWAY, took out pepper spay CONTINUED to back away and then was attacked and defended himself with lethal force. He does need to learn to aim better though.
