Did Michael Sam come out of the closet to pressure the NFL to draft him ?

the whole thing is dumb

listening to them on ESPN rave about him right now on t.v..not for being an outstanding football player, just for being a homosexual...

Obama has never come out and praised our military men and women who served our country...and then when he does, he call's them CORPSEMEN...But he's the first in line to praise this man who has done nothing OUTSTANDING for us or our country..

The actual issue is that he's a "tweener", a bit too small for defensive end and a little too slow for linebacker. He plays with a lot of heart, though. He went in about the right place. It would not have been a shock had he fallen out of the draft for the above reason, but we all know what would have been claimed. So just to avoid that crap it was good he was drafted.

I was listening to an NPR show this morning, and they had some guy on to discuss the NFL draft.
During the discussion, this guy mentioned that if Michael Sam (the guy who recently came out) makes the draft, he's likely to go somewhere between the 5th and 7th rounds, and may not be drafted at all. He mentioned while the guy is a hard worker, he's really undersized and doesn't have blazing speed.
He then mentioned it could be a PR nightmare for the NFL, if he doesn't get drafted, since there will be the inevitable claims that he wasn't drafted because he's gay.

So it got me to thinking. Maybe the whole reason for this guy to come out before the draft was to pressure the league to draft him. Maybe he knows he's not really good enough for this level of play, so he figures he can obtain a sort of wild card by coming out and place additional pressure on the league to find a place for him.

If Michael Sam goes undrafted, NFL might have a public-relations problem on its hands

Michael Sam the openly gay NFL draft prospect, spent a few days this week in New York. It was mostly a social visit, his friend and former NFL player Wade Davis said, but of course the topic was raised about being so close to where his future will be decided.

The possibilities are vast before the*draft begins Thursday*at Radio City Music Hall, and so are the talking points. Sam, projected in February as a third-round pick, dropped 70 slots in one projection*only a few hours after*coming out as gay. After a poor NFL scouting combine, a slightly better pro day at the University of Missouri, and months of*criticism about Sam’s athletic deficiencies, it’s possible the pass rusher spends three days waiting for a call that never comes.

Maybe he just didn't want to live a lie.

The NFL is made up of 30 individual franchises each with autonomous management groups. None were under any obligation to draft a player which they deem 'not a player for their team'.
Sam got drafted in the final round.
It is doubtful he will make the Rams 53 man roster this August.
However, this is about football. If Sam performs well in Camp, he may very well earn a spot on the roster or as a practice squad player.
Note the operative ....EARN....
In this case, I believe the opposite is true. If the NFL does anything untoward to influence Sam's status sp that he is placed on a team, the fan reaction and quite possibly the reaction of the other 29 NFL Clubs will be negative. It is that which should concern the NFL fan backlash. Not only that, the sponsors which pay gigantic amounts of money to advertise their products would be quite distressed if the fans deemed the NFL caved to political correctness and then decided to stop or reduce the amount of time watching games on TV.

Sam hurt his chances by having the courage to come out. I'm proud of his integrity. And, yes, the NFL may have a problem if he's not drafted, but they won't.

He will be.

Oh bullshit, you have it completely backwards.
He's getting all kinds of great publicity and entirely because he came out. If he can somehow make it past training camp, he'll be a marketing goldmine. Every gay dude in this country will be wanting one of his jerseys to jack-off on, errrr, wear.

Looks like my prediction was spot on.
