East Palestine resident pleads for help: 'It's hard to breathe'

Very likely. Those axles are supposed to have sensors that detect overheated bearings but a lot of the higher ups try to get away with the ignoring rule in order to save money.
And even if that is true, and it very well may be, it has nothing to do with Democrats. It kind of has something to do with Trump, as he overturned an Obama transportation regulation for upgrading the braking systems. So there is that.

In the majority of accidents, the NTSB, Transportation Dept. and other agencies are on the scene as fast as they can get there. Many times when the smoking wreckage is still burning and even helping rescue people from the wrecks. This "accident" has smelled rotten from the get go.
They were there on day one.

This accident smells of the train safety deregulations President Trump allowed to happen during his administration, pushed by companies like Norfolk Southern which had a lot of more profit in mind.

Hello?

Americans having difficulty breathing?

Hello?

Anyone home?

Yes Trump overturned the regulation to install brakes on each and every freight and passenger car in the system when the recommended regulation was to install those brakes only on cars carrying hazardous material.

The Biden-Harris Administration has mobilized a robust, multi-agency effort to support the people of East Palestine, Ohio.

Within hours of the Norfolk Southern train derailment, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) deployed a team to East Palestine to support state and local emergency and environmental response efforts. The Department of Transportation (DOT) also arrived on scene to investigate what led to the derailment. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been closely coordinating with the emergency operations center, Ohio Emergency Management Agency, and Federal partners.

As President Biden told Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro soon after the derailment, the Federal Government stands ready to provide any additional federal assistance the states may need. Today, in response to Governor DeWine’s and the Ohio congressional delegation’s request on February 16 for additional federal public health support, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced they are deploying a team of medical personnel and toxicologists to conduct public health testing and assessments. The team will support Federal, state, and local officials already on the ground to evaluate individuals who were exposed or potentially exposed to chemicals and help ensure timely communications to the public.

The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to supporting the people of East Palestine every step of the way, and holding Norfolk Southern accountable. Each Federal agency is playing its unique role in this task, including:

Environmental Protection Agency

EPA personnel arrived on site before dawn on February 4 to support state and local officials who are leading the emergency response efforts. There are dozens of EPA personnel on the ground, including multiple EPA on-scene coordinators, agency scientists, and regional teams, that are tasked with:

  • Monitoring Air Quality. The EPA is continuously monitoring air quality using state-of-art equipment. The EPA has also deployed mobile detection equipment and stationary equipment for detection of a wide range of compounds, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phosgene and hydrogen chloride.
  • Screening Homes for Contaminants. The EPA has assisted with the indoor air monitoring of 500 homes under a voluntary screening program offered to residents, and no detections of vinyl chloride or hydrogen chloride were identified above levels of concern. EPA is continuing to offer screening to residents within the evacuation zone.
  • Securing Norfolk Southern Commitment to Cover Clean Up Costs. On February 10, the EPA issued a letter to Norfolk Southern requiring the railroad to document the release of hazardous contaminants. The letter also outlines cleanup actions at the site and EPA’s authority under the law to hold them accountable.
  • Holding Norfolk Southern Accountable for Clean Up. The EPA is coordinating the oversight of Norfolk Southern’s soil remediation of the derailment site. The remediation includes testing of the soils within and immediately surrounding the impacted areas. Results of the testing are evaluated by EPA and OH EPA to determine a strategy to ensure the site is cleaned up to meet federal and state regulations.
  • Helping Ensure Water is Safe to Drink. EPA is assisting state and local agencies to test surface and ground water to ensure drinking water is safe. This includes surface water testing to monitor downstream impacts on the Ohio River.
National Transportation Safety Board and Department of Transportation

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), an independent federal agency charged by Congress with investigating every civil aviation accident in the U.S. and significant accidents in other modes of transportation—including railroad, highway, marine, and pipelines, and Department of Transportation arrived on site within hours of the derailment. The NTSB is leading the investigation into the cause of the derailment with Department of Transportation personnel supporting. Once the investigation is complete, the Federal Government will use all available and appropriate authorities to further ensure accountability and improve rail safety. Ongoing actions include:

  • Investigating the Cause of the Derailment. The National Transportation Safety Board has been on site since within hours of the derailment to determine what caused the derailment. NTSB plans to submit preliminary findings report within weeks, and a final report that will lay out what caused the derailment. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) within DOT are also on site supporting the NTSB’s investigation.
  • Ensuring Compliance with Rail Safety Regulations. FRA is working to determine Norfolk Southern’s compliance with rail safety regulations. When DOT gets the results from the NTSB investigation about the cause of the derailment, as well as the analysis from the FRA on rail safety compliance, DOT will take actions as needed that ensure accountability and improve safety.
  • Creating a safer rail system. DOT is working on numerous fronts to improve rail safety, including managing over $4 billion in discretionary grant programs designed to improve rail safety and eliminate at-grade rail crossings. DOT also provides training and resources for local first responders who deal with hazardous materials incidents. DOT is also working on rulemakings to improve rail safety including proposing a rule that would require a minimum of a two-person train crew size for safety reasons, a major priority for rail workers. DOT conducts research to improve the design of rail cars that carry hazardous materials. DOT is also developing a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that will require railroads to provide real-time information on the contents of tank cars to authorized emergency response officials responding to or investigating an incident involving the transportation of hazardous materials by rail.
Department of Health and Human Services and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

In response to Governor DeWine’s request on February 16 for additional federal public health support, HHS and the CDC are deploying a team of medical personnel and toxicologists to conduct public health testing and assessments. The team will include a medical toxicologist and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) Region 5 lead to support EPA and state health department efforts. ATSDR protects communities from harmful health effects related to exposure to natural and man-made hazardous substances and will send a team to interview people in the derailment area and conduct an Assessment of Chemical Exposure investigation.

Since the derailment, HHS has been providing technical assistance to state and Federal partners on emergency response, emergency management, and scientific assessments of chemicals including risk communication. This has included participating in daily state-led emergency coordination calls to provide expert advice and analysis.

Federal Emergency Management Agency

FEMA is in constant contact with the emergency operations center in East Palestine, as well as the Ohio Emergency Management Agency and Federal partners. EPA has secured Norfolk Southern’s commitment to cover all cleanup costs.

Yes Trump overturned the regulation to install brakes on each and every freight and passenger car in the system when the recommended regulation was to install those brakes only on cars carrying hazardous material.
In 2014, following several high-profile train derailments, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration and the Federal Railroad Administration (which both operate under the Department of Transportation) proposed rules to bolster safety standards for trains carrying hazardous materials.

A year later, these two agencies finalized the rule for trains carrying high-hazard, flammable materials. New trains were required to have electronic brakes, and older trains were required to be retrofitted with them by 2023. Electronically controlled pneumatic brakes work on all train cars simultaneously. This allows the train to brake faster than when equipped with conventional air brakes, which are applied sequentially along the length of the train.

A high-hazard flammable unit train was defined as a train going faster than 30 miles per hour with at least 70 loaded tank cars containing certain highly flammable liquids, such as crude oil and ethanol.

After this rule was enacted, lobbyists for railway and oil companies pushed to repeal it, questioning the effectiveness of electronic brakes and arguing that the cost of installing them was too high.

Then in 2018, under the Trump administration, the Department of Transportation repealed the rule based on government reports that determined equipping high-hazard cargo trains with electronic brakes was not economically justified. The Associated Press reported that these government reports omitted up to $117 million in estimated future damages from train derailments that could be avoided by using electronic brakes.

Following the Feb. 3 East Palestine derailment, Earthjustice, an environmental group, sent Buttigieg a letter asking the administration to reverse the change that the Trump administration made to the brake rule.

You forgot to mention the Biden Admins requirement to have only equity hiring and making sure that LGBT hiring was to be a prominent factor and as progressive as possible.

I really should be getting some sleep. We have a Hollywood film crew coming here to make a movie about a B-52 bomber crashing into the oil field in the neighborhood. Makes me think about the EP movie they made a few years ago about a train derailment in EP and many of the people were extras in the movie. But if everyone in my hood is sent post cards to go to the fire station and sign up for emergency medical alert buttons, I'm packing up and moving to Wyoming.

What does Diversity have to do with what caused the accident and the deregulation before it?

That is totally changing the topic.

Oh, the drama. I hope it all goes well with the movie making. I am sure no one will end up in a hospital, but keep us informed. Good night.

The diversity hiring will get to the point where it won't be safe to ride on any government controlled transportation. I posted information in similar threads about the pilots who were put behind the controls with inadequate training. It's getting to the point where veteran pilots are moving to private air services and even retiring early because of the danger diversity and equity hiring is causing.

This has gone on for long enough. Joe Biden has got to do something about this. It is blatantly obvious at this point that he is letting politics get in the way of helping fellow Americans. He needs to actually go to East Palestine that’s right he’s got a show up there he’s got a prove his critics wrong otherwise he might just be the worst president we’ve ever had in our history. That’s why I’m not calling Joe “President” Biden he doesn’t deserve it.

What about all of the so-called environmental Democrats where are they. Where is Al Gore has he visited Palestine?

What this story is showing us is that the Democrats are biggest hypocrites we could ever imagine. These are our fellow Americans suffering in East Palestine.. Donald Trump was always there when tragedy struck whether it was white people or Black people. Whether it was Biden voters for trump voter he was always there.

This is the story of the year so far. Nothing comes close to this one. It’s a concern that the American citizens of Palestine won’t be able to make enough money they were reporting that people don’t wanna visit the town that people want to leave that business is way down. And worse the health issues they’re having trouble breathing they’re coughing up …. well water is closed literally locked off. We had the government say hey the water is fine in Palestine and yet they’re locking up the well water. That’s what Erin Brockovich was reporting.

Before this thing keeps on getting worse why doesn’t Joe Biden just go to East Palestine and say to the residence hey I’ve had a lot of things on my plate and I’m here for you now and I want to listen to you. He needs to actually go there and put his arms around the citizens give them hugs shake their hands. Be presidential. The longer this thing goes on without Joe showing up the worse it is. If he doesn’t show up at all he is effectively one of the worst Americans in the country.

Prayers for them and nopefully action. Also, the governor should resign, if true that he declined federal assistsnce..

For most jobs, in particular the most critical jobs where lives are at risk; there needs to be a color-blind testing process where strictly the most qualified are hired. Beng a pilot as you mention in your example, is of course a prime example.

Which has what to do with the train accidents and deregulation of Train safety?

Why is it on Joseph Biden (God's choice) to fix this? Why not Mike DeWine? He's the governor of Ohio and this is an Ohio issue. Where are all the cries about "States Rights"? I thought you wingnuts didn't wan the Federal government interfering in state matters?

Where are the Republicans screaming at Norfolk to do something? It's their mess. I thought Republicans wanted the government to stop meddling in the affairs of private corporations?

You all are complete phonies. This is all about hyper-partisan politics for you.
Glad nobody had that attitude when New York City was buried under tons of rubble on 911.

BTW the last time I checked Norfolk and Western is owned by Democrats in the heavily blue state of Virginia....Epic Fail.

Why do you insist this had anything to do with the crash. It did not.The NTSB has already said the supposed EC brakes would not have prevented this derailment. That is a failed bearing that caused the derailment and subsequent fire. But the Democrats never let the truth get in the way of a good story.Liars do what liars do.

And if those EC brakes were such an issue why didn't our cocksucking transportation secretary address the so called "problem".He's been in office for 2 years. What has he done besides use his office to jet around the world on personal leave. What a joke.

The Biden administration has done a lot from the first day. Some, like you, really do not care to look at it.

He does not have to go in person to East Palestine. Let us know when Trump was at ANY train or other disaster during his administration. Zero.

This threads are nothing more than political poisoning to delegitimize what is already being done.

Buttigeg has already owned up that he should have gone there earlier. Which is a far cry from Trump never owning up that he did not want to do anything when Covid hit and got in the way of the virus being fought and taken care of.

Wish to compare things Republican and Democratic Administrations have done during disasters? By all means.
You guys keep this up while the United States declines under your iron fist of rule for decades. Republicans have gotten a relief valve on the so-called balloon when empowered. Lord knows they have had opportunities to make real changes. The first two years of Joe besides EO's he had total control in the Congress. So, if there are any Trump edicts you lame him on, Progs are at fault. joe and Jill. Two lifetime parasites who hate their own peasant class.
