Griffith was a GREAT welter-weight who won and lost the title, then won it back several times...too small to be much of a middle-weight but the old guys agree, he'd have knocked the snot out of Mayweather. What Griffith is mostly remembered for is the 1962 beating he gave Benny "The Kid" Paret which ended with Paret being killed; the result of his head hitting the ring-post several times during a Griffith flurry...the ref couldn't pull Emile off in time and Paret never regained consciousness:
As they later learned, Paret had called Griffith a "fag" during the weigh-in before the night in question and Emile was enraged. Although Paret knocked Griffith down during the fight, there was never any question who the more motivated fighter was. In the end it turned out Griffith had indeed had sex with other men and women, and toward the end of his life fredquented "gay" bars.
