Came across a really good article today that highlights key points in two of John Lott's papers that looks at empirical evidence for arguing that as the number of guns increases, the rate of violent crime actually decreases. Some of the more interesting statistics that Lott points out:

The results of this specific study seem to show that shall issue laws coincide with fewer murders, rapes, and assaults. When state concealed handgun laws went into effect, murders at the county level fell by 8.5%. Lott and Mustard estimated that if all states had adopted shall issue laws in 1992, Americans would have seen 1,777 fewer murders and 7,000 fewer rapes in that year alone.
