Last time I heard about an F-16 going down it was because the pilot was commiting suicide. Not saying that's what happened here, but F-16s are incredibly reliable aircraft.

DOUGLAS, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV)-- The Cochise County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a F-16 fighter jet crashed in Leslie Canyon northeast of Douglas Wednesday night.

A Davis Monthan Air Force Base spokesperson says the jet was with the 162nd Wing Arizona Air National Guard based in Tucson.

A spokesperson for the 162nd Arizona Air National Guard tells KGUN9 the crash happened at 8 p.m. five miles east of the Douglas Municipal Airport.

The crash happened during a night training mission. One person was on board during the crash, but the status of the pilot is unknown.

We're also told the crash may have happened near a major gas line and one home may have been evacuated because of a fast-moving fire.

Residents in the area also say they heard a loud explosion and say the sky turned orange.

A board has been appointed to investigate the crash.

Stay with KGUN9 as this story develops.

Actually the f-16's flying out of Tucson replaced the f-100 super Sabres they were still flying.

Even perfect machines are beset by the human equation. Night flying is very tricky, especially when flying nape of the earth to delay radar detection. It's almost to be accepted that this will happen now and then.

30+ year old aircraft F-16s. Amazing they're still in use at all.

I don't know why you'd be impressed by that. They can keep that old shit flying for as long as they want.
The b-52 is a perfect example of that.

There's not much to gain from night operations beyond taking off & landing, so they should probably keep that shit down to a dull roar

He was an Iraqi operating with the Jade Helm forces. He was shot down by Texas guardsmen operating covertly in the Mexican desert. The pilot survived and was spotted later at a WalMart outside of Phoenix.
