Explosive Facebook Memo Defended Company’s Strategy, Even If It Got People Killed

“We connect people. Period. That’s why all the work we do in growth is justified,” an executive wrote in 2016.

A top Facebook executive wrote an internal memo in 2016 that defended the company’s growth as necessary and justified, even if the social network was used to bully someone to death or help plan a terrorist attack.

The leaked document, obtained by BuzzFeed News and published Thursday, was written by Vice President Andrew “Boz” Bosworth. Titled “The Ugly,” Bosworth roundly defended Facebook’s acquisition of user data, what he calls “all the questionable contact importing practices” and “all the subtle language that helps people stay searchable by friends.”

“We connect people. Period. That’s why all the work we do in growth is justified,” he wrote. “All of the work we do to bring more communication in. The work we will likely have to do in China some day. All of it.”

He continued: “That can be bad if they make it negative. Maybe it costs someone a life by exposing someone to bullies. Maybe someone dies in a terrorist attack coordinated on our tools.”

“And still we connect people.”

Facebook is now trying desperately to disown the memo. Facebook has a lot to answer for. What do you think?

Just confirmed my decision not to participate. Never have, and now, definitely never will.

I'm not really sure what the problem is.

The right say "you can't take our guns, no matter what the consequences are"

People drive cars even though there are consequences to people's lives.

Boys play football, no matter the consequences to their brains.

This is a normal thing in Facebook.

Why the outrage?

I tried posting a nude picture of myself (on my page) and Facebook claimed there was a problem and would appreciate if I deleted it ASAP! :p

Fortunately, the students of the Stoneman Douglas high school are using Facebook and other social media in the most positive way possible.

They've united millions of young people across the nation and around the world, in their fight for common sense gun regulations.

FOX Noise and Laura Ingraham learned quickly just how well the students know how to use social media to fight bullies. Conservatives, the NRA, and the gun nuts have seen the students’ success as well, and are scared down to their socks.

This Facebook (FB) stuff that's hit the news of late is going to, I fear, lead to regulation of the Internet. I'm not keen on that, even as I detest plenty that happens on the Internet.

I think FB is a platform that some people abuse. FB can do whatever they want with their platform and regulate themselves, but I think FB is obligated to regulate for no other reason than business reasons. FB is not the government.

You don't have to regulate the data streams, or the internet as a whole. all that has to happen is that any site that bills itself as some form of the internet "commons", facebook, instagram, twitter, etc, would have to be content neutral, with the usual allowed exceptions for vulgarity and porn.

It would then allow these platforms to allow any voice, no matter what political side it comes from, because they would have to.

No more pressure to silence conservative posters.

They've united no one but radical fringe. They have absolutely no idea of what the US constitution is or of its contents.

Great business model: abandon middle class buyers for Tide Pod eating minors. What could possibly go wrong?

A large portion of these kids (females) dress like hookers... Where are their clothes? And quite o few of the (males) dress like gay boys who hang at the bus station... Metro-sexuals is what they call them I think... Really difficult to believe that many will remember there anarchy days of ' 18 ' a year from now...

Facebook was not a problem when it benefited the left and Obama but now it is a problem when it help the right...

For me it is simple and Facebook has always been an issue and a threat to the greater good!

Too many morons are willingly to give their private lives away to a corporation just to stay connected to friends.

I personally do not use facebook but if I did I would delete it.

They are no better than our government and in fact worse because they would sell your personal information to the highest bidder and then blame you for your stupidity!

So my opinion Facebook should die and it owners should never be allow to ever have access to the web again!
