After watching thye video, I noticed that the SUV driver being surrounded by the crowd, was probably in fear for his life. Even so, he did not gun the engine and push his way through the crowd.

His mistake was not stomping on the accelerator, leaving a few dead bodies, and un-assing the situation. It's always a good idea to think about defensive actions ahead of time. A 5,000 pound SUV can make for a pretty handy defensive weapon, if you're willing to use it.
