The U.S. and South Korea are in a pretty shitty spot. Of course defeating North Korea in the end would be a cakewalk, but not before South Korea is devastated. And that's just by conventional artillery. It looks like our best bet at this point is containment, and hopes that Kim is assassinated by one of his own.

Containment only lends him time to increase his capabilities. This applies to his plans for SK as well.

If he is assassinated, well and good, but that won't guarantee his cadre of generals won't carry on after him.

That's why we're in such a shitty spot at the moment, and I agree it will probably only get worse. Unless we're willing to risk a devastating artillery bombardment of South Korea we may have to accept North Korea as a nuclear power. It sucks, but it won't be the first or last time we have been forced to allow an adversary to obtain nuclear weapons.

Just give them the Rhineland so we may have peace!

I'm personally not super worried over North Korea having nukes. Maybe I'm just being optimistic but I believe most world dictators (Kim included) are more pragmatic than our government propaganda would have you believe. A completely irrational dictator would have been overthrown by his own people long ago out of fear that they would be brought down with him. I only hope that I'm right and that the deterrent effect that has kept us all alive for decades holds up under a nuclear North Korea.

Well, being a dictator he wants to be alive and stay in power. So, all his moves are planned around that eventual goal. He shoots these meaningless missiles just to send a signal to the UN that the sanctions will not stop him, but he does not have the balls to direct a missile at Guam. That, will be the end of his life and his regime.
