Editorial: Irrational Obama protesters speak poorly to youth

05:46 PM CDT on Thursday, September 3, 2009

The hysteria in North Texas and elsewhere over President Barack Obama's planned speech next week to schoolchildren has been both astonishing and depressing.

We spoke to a teacher in the area yesterday, who said parents were phoning the school's principal to yell at him about the president and described the situation as "out of control." Talk radio hosts and other grassroots conservatives are urging school boycotts that day. The head of the Florida Republican Party – not exactly a fringe group – issued a statement denouncing the forthcoming webcast as using taxpayer dollars "to spread President Obama's socialist ideology."

All this because the president of the United States intends to give a pep talk to schoolchildren, urging them to stay in school and work hard at their studies. "This isn't a policy speech," a White House spokesman said. "This is a speech designed to encourage kids to stay in school."

The nerve! If Obama exhorts children to be kind to their mommies, no doubt some critics will denounce him for trying to control family life.

To be sure, the White House could have handled this better. Providing the text of Obama's speech in advance would have defused some of the paranoia. The lesson guide the Education Department sent for teachers contained at least one poorly worded question, which the president's team backtracked on.

But who in their right mind could have anticipated that a president encouraging American kids to be exemplary students would set off a roaring partisan prairie fire?

Once upon a time, patriotism assumed a basic respect for America and its institutions. Conservatives have long been among the loudest voices decrying the loss of respect for authority. On a visit to this newspaper this week, conservative writer P.J. O'Rourke expressed astonishment at the boycott initiative, admitting that he's cautious about criticizing Obama around his children because he wants them to honor their president.

As a newspaper that recommended John McCain for president, we say: Good for P.J. Since when did that kind of basic civic virtue go out of fashion? Was it when some from the right-wing fringe accused Bill Clinton of murder? Was it when leftist hotheads routinely compared George W. Bush to Hitler? Funny, but conservatives used to roll their collective eyes when liberals would go berserk over the most ordinary things Bush said. Why the hypocrisy now?

And what about conservatives who railed against Hispanic student activists' plans in 2006 to skip school for a day to demonstrate for immigration reform? Why was truancy wrong then but warranted now? And to the other side: How many liberals stood up to House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt in 1991 when he blasted President George H.W. Bush's plan to address the nation's students as "paid political advertising"?

Adults teach children by example. What lessons are those blowing their tops over a presidential address passing on to youths? Is this really going to help the next generation learn how to engage thoughtfully and respectfully with elected leaders? Skepticism of those in power is a healthy instinct, necessary to a vigorous democracy. Skepticism unhinged from reason becomes paranoia and undermines the rational foundations upon which democratic self-government depends.

Part of the problem here is a function of our constitutional framework. In many countries, the head of state is not the same person as the head of government. In the United Kingdom, for example, the monarch serves a different function from the prime minister. Under the U.S. system, the president does both – which gives this or any other president a special responsibility to keep his ceremonial duties distinct from his partisan ones.

In this instance, many folks are confusing Obama's political role with his presidential one. It's dismaying to see so many Americans assume the worst about the president – our president – and his motives. Is this really the kind of country we want to be?

Great op ed piece, it pretty much nails the hypocrites to the wall.

I didn't know Poppa Bush spoke to school children. Good for him.

The White House revised the plans Wednesday to say students could "write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short-term and long-term education goals."

"That was inartfully worded, and we corrected it," Higginbottom said.

^Classic...

"Inartfully Worded"... Fucking Lawyers.

Curses! They almost had America's children in their clutches!

(And they would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those pesky Internet message board posters!)

Turning the sainted little chiiiilllldrrrreeeennn into compliant little proles belongs on the lesson plans of Soviet Russia, Nazi Germany and countries where the prime potentate's portrait is painted on the sides of every building in the country, not America.

You show a great disrespect for what the people of Cuba have suffered through when you try to somehow liken the current state of our nation to the plight and fear the people of Cuba have faced for decades.

___________

And you fail to see the historical correlations.

The Cuban Revolution did not happen overnight - propaganda was essential to Castro's ultimate cause, a cause that saw various phases over a number of years. Cuba went from a democratic revolution - as promised by Castro, to an eventual Marxist Socialism where power was centered on an elite few - much to the dismay of the Cuban people. Castro had initially promised them a revolution "as green as the palm trees". What he ultimately gave them was tyranny and generations of centralized government oppression.

There are parallels to Castro's Cuba and the seeming tilt toward a more centralized socialism in the United States. Is it an accident a number of Democrats are now openly praising the works of Castro?

It is an apt comparison...

Ahem

And the left did what to Bush???

Hello pot... this is kettle calling... something regarding the color black

The republicans are just plain clueless
They seem to think that these type of tantrums, the town meeting shoutdowns, the armed protesters somehow endear them to moderate Americans.
They are reinforcing the image that the republican party is a party of radical bullies out of touch with America. Where is the voice of reason within the republican party?

Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck are not your friends

Yeah, I guess I'm failing to see the historical parallels between a democratically elected POTUS and a dictator who took absolute power through armed revolution.

My bad.

What has to happen to a person that their partisan hatred for the opposing party becomes so rampant that they decide to keep their children home from school so that they aren't subjected to a message from the President telling their children to "work hard in school?"

BTW...I am not the first person to say this, but it was so well said, I had to repeat it.

What country do you live in? The US is built on the foundation that the people are bigger and more important than the government, period. If you don't like protests and voicing against the government move the fuck to China, there everyone is forced to fall lock step behind their government.

Do you believe the town hall shoutdowns represent the foudation our country was built on?
Do you think sending armed protestors to political rallies help prove your point?
Do you think calling a presidential speech in favor of educational values "indoctrination" is stamping the republicans as a responsible political organization?

republicans are a party in exile....this will keep them there permanently

Quite an interesting opinion for someone that admits she's on Medicare. Maybe if your hero Sarah Palin gets in power she can make sure that the lefties aren't allowed to object to lies.
