Francis Keys bridge hit by ship. Bridge collapses, mass casualty event.

Here is the track of the ship. It was on course to miss the bridge. Three minutes before hitting the bridge, rudder commands were received, according to official NTSB statement. At that time, the ship changed course and headed directly towards the bridge pier, and then there was the power loss and the ship proceeded on that course as shown .

Explain please, Captain...

The ship lost power which also meant it lost the ability to steer and maneuver which resulted in the ship being at the mercy of the currents.

Idiots.

No it hasn’t. “ Dead in the water” means no way on, or in landsman’s terms zero knots through the water.
Dead in the water means a vessel has no power and ability to maneuver. It is helplessly drifting with the current.

"Dead in the water" is a phrase/idiom that has more than one meaning. Everyone in this thread that has used it has done so correctly. Can y'all stop arguing over it now?

unable to function or move; inoperable

If something is dead in the water, it has failed and it seems impossible that it will be successful in the future.

completely inactive or inoperable; no longer in action or under consideration
at a standstill from the loss of power, momentum, vigor, etc.
destined for certain failure or ruin; doomed

Your brain is dead in the water. You're a moron.

A vessel which is dead in the water is one which has lost engine power.
Yes (loss of power), but it's not moving wherefore if it is moving, then it's adrift without power. Dead in the water means no power and the vessel is not moving (anchors deployed to avoid drift).

The question is, did the currents affect the ship enough to guide it off course, and therefore put it into the bridge ? Investigation must show this to be the case.

The key to your statement is "helplessly drifting with the current". She was never drifting with the current, she was being moved by the momentum of her hundred thousand tons or so of mass.

Her massive weight was being moved by currents.

For crying out loud you idiots.

Of course they did. The ship was unable to steer and avoid hazards. WFT is wrong with you people?

Agree, but currents is your thing, and they may not have played much of a role at all. The water itself could have been like ice to the ship when it went powerless depending on the depth of the water verses the draft, the speed and the foward momentum. The ship could have virtually slid into the bridge by way of drift without power to steer.

Currents aren’t my thing. They are a fact. Yes the ship could have slid into the bridge by way of drift. That’s because of currents.

Sheesh.

But it would have been a gentle nudge, the bridge would probably not have fallen. Force equals mass times velocity, eight knots times about a hundred thirty thousand tons. By any measure that is a lot of force.

FBI Investigation Has Begun...

"On Monday morning, federal agents appeared to board the ship to conduct a search. Less than an hour after the sun rose at 6:30 a.m., a succession of three boats pulled to the port side of the Dali. About 6:50 a.m. Monday, people wearing yellow or orange life jackets entered the Dali through a lower door and climbed a ladder to the ship’s bow. About a half-hour later, nearly a dozen more people wearing dark clothing pulled up in a smaller boat and climbed aboard.

The FBI confirmed in a statement that its agents were on the ship.
“The FBI is present aboard the cargo ship Dali conducting court authorized law enforcement activity,” the agency said in a statement Monday morning.

The FBI said it did not have any additional public information and would not comment further.
