Nice idiotic reply there, Dive. There is a trend of upward temperatures overlain with other cycles. So there will be downward periods as well as upward periods. What is obvious from the graph and the filtered mean is that the lows now are higher than the highs used to be.

Watch what happens to the temperatures in the next El Nino. We should see that within the next 3 years.

From 1895 to 1925, the temperature was almost totally below the mean. From 1925 to 1955, mostly above the mean, from 1955 to 1980 below the mean, from 1980 to today, completely above the mean.

In fact, 2008, a strong La Nina of unusual duration, on the minimum of the solar cycle. It should have been one of the coldest years of the last century. Instead, what we saw was the eighth warmest year on record. How does that translate into a cooling trend?

its the only actual observed data they have
about 150 years worth
the rest is from ice samples where they guesstimate
they get close but that why the earlier data shows a much more steady stable line
