Good idea or not? According to this, they want the FBI to handle firearms, explosives and arson while DEA would handle alcohol.

Additionally, the Act calls for an immediate hiring freeze at the agency and requires the Department of Justice to eliminate and reduce duplicative functions and waste, as well as report to Congress with a detailed plan on how the transition will take place,” it continued. “Further, it would transfer enforcement of firearms, explosives and arson laws to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and illegal diversion of alcohol and tobacco products would be transferred to the Drug Enforcement Agency

WAY overdue

Republicans have also introduced a Bill to Reform Silencer Laws to Both Houses of Congress - something else that is way overdue.

the tax on silencers was first brought in during the great depression - apparently there were many folks that were illegally hunting on government lands (especially national parks) & most were doing it just to feed their families during hard times; so this law to make silencers illegal was passed primarily to make it easier for Park Rangers and other law enforcement officials to prevent poaching on federal land & to make it harder for citizens to get away with hunting there

The federal government LOSES roughly $17 million a year enforcing this archaic law - this is what "draining the swamp looks like!!!

Republicans in the House of Representatives and the Senate introduced legislation this week to reform the laws that govern firearm silencers. The twin bills, both named the Hearing Protection Act, were introduced by Reps. Jeff Duncan (R., S.C) and John Carter (R., Texas) in the House and Sen. Mike Crapo (R., Idaho) in the Senate.

The bills would remove the special $200 tax and months-long registration process currently applied to silencers. The requirement that anyone buying a silencer from a licensed gun dealer pass a background check will remain.

Gun rights advocates have long argued that silencers are a safety device since they reduce the noise associated with firing many firearms from a level that is damaging to the shooter’s hearing to a level that, while not actually silent, is far safer. They believe that easier access to and wider adoption of the devices could reduce firearm-related hearing damage, especially for those who commonly hunt without hearing protection. Advocates often compare firearms silencers to car mufflers since Hiram Percy Maxim had a hand in creating both and they both utilize the same technology.

The concept, in principle, makes sense.

I agree with Jake. In principle, it makes sense.
But I don't know that the FBI won't abuse the right to firearms, in the control of a democratic administration. The FBI is an investigating entity. They have enough power.

I like it, we have duplicate services being preformed by many federal agencies. Have you ever asked yourself why we have 17 different intelligence agencies? It doesn't make sense, no wonder they can't put together effective policies, no one knows what the other guys are doing.

I wonder how this new silencer freedom is going to impact new policing technology such as gunfire monitors?

I would think the Central Intelligence Agency uses data from the subordinate agencies to make a comparative analysis. Consolidation might make more sense ostensibly but would destroy the effect of check and balance afforded by independent agenciesl

Suppressors, there is no such thing as a silencer.

First, what makes you think the other agencies are subordinate to the CIA? Second I might buy 2 or 3 agencies, not 17. That's 17 different bureaucracies and cultures the tax payers have to support.

Agreed Texas. Why not consolidate a little, plus the big savings is in getting rid of the heads of these agencies. If they need add a few people to help pick up the slack, it will come from the rank and file of the agency being eliminated.

What "subordinate" agencies would those be?

You save not only on the heads of the agencies but the administrative portions as well. But in my opinion you'll get a more efficient effort and more cohesive policies with fewer chiefs.

Well, so far (which is surprising) the left isn't screaming. Maybe they haven't figured out yet this is one way to downsize government, or maybe they turned over a new leaf. I don't know, but what everyone does know that government is to large. It is going to be a tricky balancing act for Trump though, because if he cuts to many government jobs at once, the crying will start instantly. Slow and steady hand, freeze all hiring, eliminate agencies, consolidate everywhere feasible. That is what a businessperson does, so it is no surprise that is what he is doing in Washington.

Alcohol and Tobacco are there because they are tax revenue profit centers. Firearms should go to the FBI, and they should add Marijuana and Health insurance to the tax revenue profit centers, role it all into the IRS, and call it MATH.

No, the problem is that, in spite of creating a monstrous DHS to supposedly mesh everything together, most agencies don't share squat with the others!

When I buy a firearm they call the FBI not the ATF for the background check. As for suppressors, hearing protection should take priority and no paperwork bullshit. I support disbanding the ATF. My recommendation back in 2001 was to give them to Homeland. I also object to too many Fed agencies having SWAT teams to harass landowners. Swat teams should be kept busy busting urban drug gangs.

The FBI do the background checks when a firearm is purchased. Not the ATF. The FBI will abuse whatever authority they are given, they always have, but then again so does the ATF.
