Life-changing government inventions- MSN Money

Federally funded research is behind many of the innovations that affect our lives each day. Here's a look at 10 of the most significant.

1. GPS
2. Internet
3. Infant Formula
4. Search Engines
5. Bar codes
6. Long lasting tires
7. Microchips
8. Touch screens
9. Vaccines
10. Modern wind energy

Of course, who can say what else might have been invented, or invented sooner, had government not taken from the economy the wealth, resources and talent that came up with those inventions. Free people making voluntary decisions in a free market tends to produce superior results to central planners, so I say in lieu of government meddling, we not only have the inventions you list, but better, quicker to market ones.

You'll notice the overwhelming number and quality of inventions produced by free people long before the government meddled in such things. By your logic, we should still be waiting for some bureaucrat to invent the wheel...

Federal funding doesn't mean the gubmint itself invented those things, nor does it follow such things wouldn't have been invented in the absence of such funding.

And "modern wind energy" is the biggest technological joke since virtual reality.

But 'tis the season to pay homage to one's god, so have at it, lolberals.

GPS never would have come from the private sector
The internet probably would have evolved if developed by the private sector, but not todays free internet
Profitable vaccines would be developed
Microchips involved massive investment. They may have come from the private sector but they never would have burst on the scene

the private sector has made BANK off of the ideas developed in government funded research

Government is also behind:

1. Mustard Gas
2. Landmines
3. Machine guns
4. The pollution that results from the manufacture of those long lasting tires
5. nuclear weapons
6. cluster bombs.

All sorts of stuff progressives just LOVE.

Government inventions that changed our world?

The War on Terror.

Good one. To that, I would add:
The war on poverty (up over 2% since entitlement spending started)
The war on drugs ( Harvard economist Jeffrey A. Miron estimated that legalizing drugs would save taxpayers $76.8 billion a year in the United States )

One wonders if 'good' government inventions are outweighed by 'bad' ones.

Bullshit.....Just bullshit.

I worked on GPS when it was being developed and tested. It was supposed to be for military use only. The private sector never would have put up the satellites let alone allow everyone to use it for free

Don't forget the "war on crime".

This is the best you can do? Would it destroy you if I pointed out that not a single one of those things was invented by any government anywhere in the world? If it doesn't, would pointing out that the actual people who invented at least one of the things you are trying to give the government credit for did not even work for the government when they invented the microchip? Or that, whatever the fuck you think modern wind energy is, windmills have been used to power things for centuries?

Yeah, because no one in the private sector ever would have seen the advantage of using microchips. The strangest thing about that argument is that the private sector switched to solid state devices decades before the government did.

Really? That explains why the private sector never invented free TV, or even lighthouses.
