Greatest thread to human civilization : capitalist greed - Stephen Hawkin

Whatever it was that was keeping the pro-socialism and anti-capitalist voices down clearly isn't doing so any more. This should be interesting. .
IMHO Economic times get tough and the socialist "gub'mint take someone elses shit and gimme free stuff!" mentality comes to the surface, times get good and all of sudden everyone is pro-capitalism again.

Of course if gub'mint would stop attempting to manipulate the marketplace so much times would never get so tough in the first place......
In my sick little world, the success of most endeavors hinges on the identification of, and respect for, equilibrium. Personally, and I don't think we're going to agree on this, it looks pretty clear to me that we have lost the equilibrium that is required to keep capitalism functioning at an optimum level for all. In other words, yeah, the disparity between top and bottom is too large right now to maintain a healthy society for long, and we're seeing that manifest.

But here's what scares me: As you point out, we tend to knee-jerk, maybe that's a standard human frailty. And what concerns me is this current push towards a Euro-socialist system will go too far.

On a spectrum, and we'll disagree on this too, I'm about half way between where we are now and a Euro-socialist system. BUT I can easily see the Left gaining TOO much momentum and taking it too far.

There, chew on THAT one for a minute.

Oh I agree in order for capitalism to function efficiently it does require equilibrium, which means (to me) that it needs government to maintain a level playing field (i.e. act as a referee that seeks to ensure NO FAVORITISM and NO FRAUD), unfortunately today government actively participates in playing favorites and sells it's regulatory and taxation largess to the highest bidders so it is the epicenter of the the income and wealth disparity that you're referring to. Government interference also acts to severely inhibit competition which is the very essence of why capitalism is so efficient and effective at raising general living standards and generating broad based wealth.

Ask yourself which is easier for business, to compete on a level playing field or to simply go and buy regulatory and taxation favoritism from all too willing sellers in government? Which is harder for new enterprises (aka potential competitors) to overcome? and it's not just business it's everything, the aristocracy of pull in this country has enormous power in everything from elections to the distribution effects of inflation to how are trade "deals" are written with other countries.

Well, now you're moving into politics and yeah, there is no doubt that our current fucked up political "system" is playing a significant role in this mess. The role of corruption and influence is big, it's bad and it's blatant, and it's not being addressed for any number of reasons.

Seems to me that, by far, most of the momentum is on the side of the populists right now, and it's made its way to the culture. So the question to me is how far this momentum pushes us to the Left before it runs its course.

He's right. Centuries ago this time period was envisioned to be a time of lesuire, and it could be so much nicer for us, but instead of creating beautiful gardens I had to spend my time paying the banks for the land.

we are being seriously wroughted and for No reason other than idiot greed box's need for status.

its really something I was always frustrated about. Why all the drudgery?
I know work is good but does it have to be soul destroying? No, it doesn't.

"so much nicer for us". Are you advocating that those who have succeeded be forced to give up more of it so those who chose to buy land have it paid for by someone else?

Progressive government murder over 100 million and impoverish over a billion, but capitalism is the problem.

What a marooooon

“If machines produce everything we need, the outcome will depend on how things are distributed.” Hawking continued, “Everyone can enjoy a life of luxurious leisure if the machine-produced wealth is shared, or most people can end up miserably poor if the machine-owners successfully lobby against wealth redistribution. So far, the trend seems to be toward the second option, with technology driving ever-increasing inequality."

YES!! you have been warned of the OP's stupidity.., move along folks, nothing to see here.

"Capitalism" is not a simplistic monolith with only one (1) application.

Partisan politics dumbs down pretty much everything, and this is an example.

Hawkins also believes there is a race of violent technologically advanced aliens that is going to attack the earth and kill us all...

Idiots. It is amazing how some of the smartest people can be so dumb.
Capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than anything else. IT's benefits are literally without precedence.

Opportunity is what allows Capitalism to lift people out of poverty, exploitation by Capitalists creates income inequality and social unrest; it is why Capitalists need to be regulated by a government elected by the people.

Today, do to both Citizens United rulings, and the greed of the mass media, elected officials are purchased by the wealthy and govern for the wealthy.

Simple minds never take the long view, and Rabbi is one of the simplest minds around.

True. Polluters are the aliens who put profit well before our posterity. And who are the Polluters? Anti Regulation Capitalists off course.

we must have gotten more capitalistic since Progressives started governing us; because income inequality has exploded on their watch; growing AT A FASTER PACE THAN IT WAS UNDER "GREEDY" RIGHT-WINGERS

libs are losers who lie to themselves

Capitalism is what has kept the asshole alive.

Its so amusing to see posters on a message board calling Stephen Hawking an idiot. He is the Einstein of our age.
I wouldn't call him an idiot but I also wouldn't compare him with Einstein. What has he really contributed besides fantasy thinking?

Maybe Rabbi is not the simplest mind around?

The rich get richer, and the rest do not, most fall behind. That has been true since the 1981 election. Progressives support a progressive income tax, and taxes are anathema to the current crop of Republicans.

Democrats have been branded as the party of Tax and Spend. What has proven to be much worse is the don't tax and spend Republicans.

Look up how much money was spent on the war of choice in Iraq, how much has the majority in the H. or Rep. spent on politically motivated investigations since Boehner became speaker?

your own mind is much simpler than the people you're making a fool of yourself being smug toward.

Republicans havent been running the government; Progressives have; and poverty has gotten considerably worse on their watch

libs are losers who lie to themselves

obama is investigating hillary's email server; only a self-deluding loser thinks 30,000 emails wiped from a server couldnt have included information relevant to the Benghazi tragedy

money spent on investigations dwarf money Progressives spent on any number of items; including the $20 BILLION OR SO doled out to obama's crony campaign donaters for "green" jobs that never materialized

libs are losers who lie to themselves

Nice ATTEMPT to spin it, but Hawkins is actually talking about 'little green men', not failed 'little green energy companies'.

In what reality do you reside?

Your second paragraph is convincing you have no understanding of how our Federal Government works; the rules of each chamber of congress and the limited power of POTUS create checks, balances and since 2010, impasse.

Don't post what you hear from Limbaugh or Hannity, it only makes you appear stupid.
