For religious folks: the hell you live in terror of is an adult version of the monster under the bed. It plays on a primitive and basic fear of the unknown. Could there be this thing lurking in the shadows beneath where you sleep? Will it drag you under and keep you there forever? Sure, you might look under the bed with a Flashlight and see nothing, the evidence is all inductive, but what if it's there, like people say? And in this nightmare kids' story, only dad can save you, dad who's always watching but will only help you if you swear your love to him and devote yourself to him. Your monster, and your savior, are both monsters.

And you might say, I don't fear the monsters because I worship my dad constantly the way he likes, so I know he'll save me. But isn't that living in an especially twisted sort of terror all the same?

The good news, is the scary children's book about the monsters says all this stuff that's been debunked. The monster, and the dad, never appear in a controlled lab setting and only in folks' imagination. Want me to hold the Flashlight and check with you? There, see, no historical records of any of dad's miracles outside of the story book, no hint of the monster, or of this dad, anywhere in the known universe, only happy creatures going to sleep soundly as they have for billions of years. The end. Sleep well. :)

Gee. Imagine that.

Someone thinks that the fact that I don't kill them or steal from them is a bad thing -- a "monster".

I think I remember some kids parents threatening monsters under the bed if their kids didn't behave but there's a point when those training wheels come off and it's just good not to steal and stuff because you care about others and enjoy being a decent person over being a monster under the bed...

Parents tell kids there’s monsters under their beds that will get them if they misbehave? Is that really a thing?
I think more often they go with telling them there's a fiery pit of hellfire they'll burn in for all eternity if they disobey their Father but hey a lot of parents tell their kids cruel jokes to get them to behave. It's a thing.

Maybe in that poster's family.

I never heard such a thing in mine.

Yes, because children behaving in a moral way is a thing too.

Kind of an alien concept to demscum, but it IS a thing. Trust me.

And occasionally it even happens among atheists. There are people who are good for the sake of being good.

Trust the person calling people of another political party scum? If that's what your religion has done for you what good is your monster under the bed? Sounds like you've made pals with it.

TRRRRIGGERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.

What does this mean?
If the monster is an analogue for hell, and the point of hell is to scare believers into being good people, is it serving its function if believers go around being self-justified dicks?

I'm sorry, I forgot your religion is cynicism.

As if you did not start this thread with the very similar aim of deriding "the other side".

Make sure your own hands are clean before telling me to wash mine.

Who, precisely, are you calling "dick", after whining about my use of the word "scum"?

:lame2:try.

Have you ever considered picking up the art of the indirect jab? Rather than just being all "bitch" "fucker" "scum" etc

Jesus became enraged when he was criticized for his sect not washing their hands and he did away with the existing Jewish tradition, lending way for nearly two thousand years of cooks, doctors, and the sick spreading what they had on them...
(See Mark 7)

So...................

No response to the actual point of my post.

Got it.

Bye.

Psalms 14:1

“(To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.) The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good

Don't worry, goodness has been proven - only God has been disproven. It's safe to come out from under the covers.
