History Is Clear: Socialism Isn't the Cure. So Why Do Millennials Like It?

First of all there is no evidence that millennials like socialism. Thanks to the government run education system in the last couple of decades, millennials might be the dumbest and possibly the most self absorbed generation but they like their stuff and you only get good stuff in a democracy. (Millennials in Hong Kong will tell you that). When you add the fact that today's media might be the most dishonest source of information we have ever experienced you get the perception that millennials are pro socialist but it ain't necessarily so.

Most of Bernie Sanders supporters are young people in spite of his age. Polls also show the support for Socialism in the US are younger people.

Younger people today don't want to deal with problems. Socialism offers relief from those problems.

Young people want Government to stop being an agent for the wealthy and start doing more for the people

You mean give them things? The government doesn't give "things" to the wealthy. They make enough to have their own things. As generations went on, the government taught people to be less and less responsible. Now it's to the point they don't want responsibility for anything, hence favoring Socialism. Whenever there's a problem, don't try to solve it yourself. Call government, and they'll solve it for you.

Yes.....
Things like affordable healthcare, low cost higher education....all proper uses of taxpayer funds that benefit society

Yes, yes, yes.....the Government gives things to the wealthy
An educated workforce, police and fire protection, modern infrastructure, legal protections, military protection of foreign investments, subsidies

young people, some of them, are too naive to understand the falacy in that. I don't think you are young, but you are certainly stupid if you believe that a socialist government would have your best interests in mind.

In a socialist state all of the power and all of the wealth resides in a tiny elite minority and everyone is EQUALLY miserable. Because that minority has convinced the masses that they know best how to live YOUR life. Socialism appeals to the naive, ignorant, and stupid.
I think young people are capable of understanding they are getting fucked by our society

They are told to work hard, get educated and you will get jobs that make it all worthwhile

What they get is an educational system that is becoming affordable only to the rich. They get low paid jobs and a frozen minimum wage that in no way pays for their education. Once they graduate, they are saddled with massive debt and low paying entry jobs with few benefits and limited chances for advancement

No wonder they support Bernie

Sure, so Bernie is going to make us pay for their advanced education so they can work for minimum wage.

That's how Democrats solve problems. Remember that Liz Warren was paid 400K for teaching college, but she and her like can't be the problem when it comes to affordability.

this post ^^^^^ is a clear example of partisan ignorance. you don't understand that its dem policies (unlimited student loans) that have made college so expensive or that the colleges have taken advantage of the stupidity and driven tuition up because the govt will pay whatever they charge.

so supporting Bernie would get you to pay 40-50% of your income to the federal govt. Is that what you want?

They have that stuff for everybody, not the rich. Low cost education? How are they going to get that? Are they going to make everybody in college earn half their pay now? Of course not. The price of college will increase dramatically, and they will get the taxpayer to pay for it.

It doesn't benefit me if somebody goes to college to become an engineer, a doctor, or architect. It benefits them.

400K for teaching ONE class, and she only got that job by fraudulently claiming to be of native american decent. She is the biggest fraud in congress.

Correct. College is like any other business. They base their prices on supply and demand. As the years went by, more and more kids ended up going to college, so the price increases. Now imagine government sending even more people to college. What does supply and demand dictate when you make the demand even higher?

We can’t have a modern, educated workforce to man a modern economy if we make the degrees excessively expensive and starting salaries too small to pay for that education

Bernie and Liz Warren understand that. Something has to change

Advanced education is an investment.

What is an investment? An investment is when you take (or borrow) money, and buy something that will not only make the money back, but at a profit as well.

People who graduate college in general make much more than people that don't; an investment. They have a lower unemployment rate, and in most cases, have jobs that don't require a lot (or any) physical labor.

What you are telling me to do is fund some kid going to college to become a lawyer. And if I need legal help one day, he or she is going to charge me 500 bucks for an office visit. Where is the justice in that?

Something has gotta give

We can increase investment in public colleges to bring down prices, subsidize and provide low/ free education, require businesses that hire college graduates to subsidize the cost of education, mandate employees to either pay higher initial wages or help defer loan payments

why not get government totally out of education and let the free market of supply and demand set the price of education? If young people can't afford college then the colleges would either have to close their doors or reduce tuition. the government cannot fix everything, I doubt that you will ever understand that, but its a simple fact.

the solutions you suggest would only make things worse and kick the can down to the next generations. someone has to pay, eventually. So why not let the proven economic laws of supply and demand operate without govt interference.

also, the idea that everyone needs and is entitled to a college education is bullshit, the world will always need plumbers, electricians, carpenters and auto mechanics and those jobs pay good salaries.

You'd be closing off the market for college graduates doing it that way. After all, you can only charge one employer to pay off those loans--the first employer that hires him or her.

Make higher education accessible only to the rich. Provide an uneducated, unskilled. Low paid workforce

Nobody said everyone is even capable of a college degree. We need to make trade schools more accessible and affordable.

stop twisting my words, I said make college affordable to everyone by forcing colleges to reduce tuition through supply and demand. Trades should be taught in high schools and apprentice programs reintroduced by companies employing those who work with their hands.

I don't think we are very far apart on this, the only difference being that you think the government should mandate how things are done, while I believe in letting the free market operate.

how about if each person pays for his/her education? the way it used to be

Multiple forms of socialism, from hard Stalinism to European redistribution, continue to fail.

Russia and China are still struggling with the legacy of genocidal communism. Eastern Europe still suffers after decades of Soviet-imposed socialist chaos.

Cuba, Nicaragua, North Korea and Venezuela are unfree, poor and failed states. Baathism -- a synonym for pan-Arabic socialism -- ruined the postwar Middle East.

Sure, so Bernie is going to make us pay for their advanced education so they can work for minimum wage.

That's how Democrats solve problems. Remember that Liz Warren was paid 400K for teaching college, but she and her like can't be the problem when it comes to affordability.

We can’t have a modern, educated workforce to man a modern economy if we make the degrees excessively expensive and starting salaries too small to pay for that education

Bernie and Liz Warren understand that. Something has to change

what would they change? make college cheaper? how? make starting jobs pay more? how? raising taxes on everyone will not do either of those things.

Something has gotta give

We can increase investment in public colleges to bring down prices, subsidize and provide low/ free education, require businesses that hire college graduates to subsidize the cost of education, mandate employees to either pay higher initial wages or help defer loan payments

So you think that somebody will hire an engineer with no experience, and pay their 150K in college loans instead of hiring an engineer that doesn't come with that kind of liability? You'd be closing off the market for college graduates doing it that way. After all, you can only charge one employer to pay off those loans--the first employer that hires him or her.
That’s the way it should be
If you need an engineer, YOU should pay to educate him not the taxpayer

How about neither educate them and let them educate themselves? If you were a company looking to hire an engineer, and you had two applicants: one just out of college with no experience, but you'd have to pay for is college, or two, an applicant with experience who's college would not be your problem, which one would you pick?

That's the point I'm making. No employer wants to hire somebody with a 200K liability right from the start, especially a company starting out with limited capital.

why not get government totally out of education and let the free market of supply and demand set the price of education? If young people can't afford college then the colleges would either have to close their doors or reduce tuition. the government cannot fix everything, I doubt that you will ever understand that, but its a simple fact.

the solutions you suggest would only make things worse and kick the can down to the next generations. someone has to pay, eventually. So why not let the proven economic laws of supply and demand operate without govt interference.

also, the idea that everyone needs and is entitled to a college education is bullshit, the world will always need plumbers, electricians, carpenters and auto mechanics and those jobs pay good salaries.
Typical conservative asshole

Make higher education accessible only to the rich. Provide an uneducated, unskilled. Low paid workforce

Nobody said everyone is even capable of a college degree. We need to make trade schools more accessible and affordable.
Trade schools are even a bigger scam than colleges

Trade schools are much less expensive than college, and you get into the work force much quicker as well. The problem is kids these days figure if they're going to invest in an advanced education, they are not going to go through the time and costs only to end up working with their hands.
