I know this will make the far left have a collective seizure, but it's true that liberal policies that encourage the breakup of families and a nanny state are the main reasons that people do not pull themselves up. The left only sees two extremes, the super wealthy and the dirt poor. The reason they never bring up the middle class is because it's in the way of their plans. They are systematically destroying middle class and they'd rather people forgot it even exists. All we hear is taking more from the rich and giving to the poor with no expectations of people involved in their own progress. Of course, it's middle class they take from, but the media isn't about to look too hard at what liberal policies actually achieve. They only report on the intentions, not the disastrous results.

Encouraging dependency also encourages single parenthood and a lack a concern about community. The entitlement mentality keeps people focused on what government can do for them, not what they can do for themselves, their families or their communities. That responsibility was turned over to government long ago. Over 50 years of welfare and government programs and the result is more people lined up for help and fewer climbing out of poverty. It's more than a failed system. It's by design and that makes it far worse.

Your wished for "seizure" is not happening, we hear this same thing everyday and are quite immune to shock at yet another reiteration of "Helping people=slavery".

So before the era of welfare or help, everyone in the US was not in poverty?
In the 19th century the US govt. gave you free land, is that not welfare or help?

Hilarious. Right wingers "concerned" about people they don't give a shit about. The real reason the right pretends to care about poor blacks and Hispanics is so when they screw them over politically, they can say, "Oh, but we care. We are trying to help them but they won't help themselves. So if we starve them and deny them health care and education, they will finally do something constructive".

And yet, they send confusing signals. On one hand, the right wing base seems to disagree with their leaders, but then they vote those mean spirited asswipes into office again and again.

I wouldn't have a problem with right wingers wanting to do something for poor whites. But if you go look at who is actually helping these people, it seems to be left wingers with right wingers trying to block anything helpful.

America's Poorest Whites

Kentucky began calling Owsley County a "pauper county" as far back as the 1890s, because it took more state tax revenue than it contributed. Since the federal government began tracking poverty rates in 1959, Owsley has ranked as one of the nation’s poorest counties. By the 1960s, when much of the United States had moved into prosperity, Southern Appalachia’s shoeless children, living in mountain shacks without electricity or plumbing, seemed like relics—trapped in a sticky poverty that modernity had yet to solve.

yep... the goal of the left elites is to destroy the middle class.....and create a dependent underclass...

it's why liberals focus on 'minimum wages' for the bottom barrel jobs instead of robust business development that would create good jobs and more more middle class workers....

it's why liberals focus on 'gay marriage' and sexual 'liberation' instead of real marriages and family values that would prevent abortions and all those poor dependent mothers living off government handouts....

So there were no abortions before Roe vs Wade?

after RvW the number of abortions soared drastically.....the sheer enormity of the number of abortions makes that obvious and also proves that women are not using abortion as just a 'last choice'.....since 1973 there have been 55 million abortions....

In order for your claim to be true,

if all poverty programs were eliminated, then poor Americans would start coming out of poverty at a rate faster than they do currently.

Unless you can demonstrate a plausible scenario as to how when where and why that would happen,

your argument has a value of ZERO.

I see once again that the concept went over the heads of liberals. It's as simple as understanding the commonly used phrase of giving a hand up instead of a hand out.

There have always been poor people and there always will be. The answer to helping people rise above it isn't a government program that seeks to make them comfortable in poverty, rather one that demands that the able-bodied do more on their end to climb out of it. The liberal politicians always promise to do more for people and they need people dependent on them. In 50 years, the problem has become worse. When your ideas have the opposite effect, you scrap them and start over. Anyone would agree with that. Yet, the liberals have only put those failed ideas in overdrive, leading me to think that an increasing underclass of dependents is the goal. Nothing else makes sense.

Too many young people are following in the footsteps of their parents, grandparents and even great grandparents by having children at a young age and settling in to a life of welfare. Government has taken over the role of the father in providing for the children, though when it comes to setting a good example, politicians have proven to be deadbeat dads.

If liberals wanted to help people, they wouldn't constantly remind them that they are helpless victims, they would remind them of their potential to make it on their own and eventually not need the government to steal on their behalf. Instead of doing that, the liberals constantly push the entitlement mentality and tell young people that they deserve things simply because they exist.

Why not send the message that we all need to rise to the occasion and become the ones to help the disabled, elderly and temporarily downtrodden? No liberal politician talks about people pulling themselves up, only that government should do more. That is why few settle for the basic promise of welfare, which was a roof over their head and food on the table until they stabilized their situation. Now they want more. They want better homes, free phones, free school and free healthcare. The whole idea is that others, namely middle class, can provide everything they need and they never have to worry about even trying to obtain things for themselves.

All the liberal programs do is keep people content to be poor and destroy the middle class by making sure any extra money they have will be confiscated by government. I would have a healthy retirement account if not for the taxes I pay and I could have paid my children's college tuition in full rather than be saddled with student loans. I would rather use my own money to build my own nest, but government would rather take that from me and force me to turn to them when I'm older.

When I see young people quitting school and having more kids each year, I know they've given up doing for themselves and intend to turn to government for all their needs. It's wrong and it's not helping them at all. It sure isn't helping those who bear the burden.

If liberal policies keep people in poverty, then ending liberal policies would cause people to get out of poverty.

To prove that isn't bullshit,

you have to identify the liberal policies, assume that they were ended, and then demonstrate how people then get out of poverty because the policies were ended.

That's how an argument works. Or in this case, doesn't work.

So in 40 years there have been 55 million abortions. That's 1,375,000 a year on average in a country with a populace that now has over 300,000,000 people.

So from a sliding upward scale of 212,000,000 in 1973 to our current population, that constitutes from 0.0025 to 0.0045% of our population. Excuse me, but that's hardly endemic.

Jesus said that " the poor will always be with you " That is because the dumb, lazy, criminal minded, nuts, and their enablers will always be among us. However, when you reward irresponsibility you get more of it, and that is precisely what liberal policies do at the expense of the tax payer. If you want less of something - punish it.

Okay. So take Medicaid and food stamps away from the poor.

How soon before, en masse, they start getting less poor?

Okay. Continue subsidizing them

How soon before, en masse, they start getting more rich?
