Yeah, I think one mistake that is made by politicians, politicos, partisans and pundits is that they assume the entire country consists of fellow political geeks.

That said, I can tell you anecdotally that it seems like this ugliness is spreading. I began noticing three or four years ago that my advisory clients (when you talk finance, politics often seep into the conversation) are becoming more and more agitated and ideological. Tribal. Pissed. In fairness, that may just be my impression.
