Not sure how valid it is. Countries like China don't have a religion that includes the belief in God, yet they have been around for 5000 years or so, ups and downs notwithstanding, and are still doing rather well (even if their idea of government doesn't meet Western standards).
However, it seems plausible to me that a country or a people that doesn't have some kind of belief in itself, will fail on the long run ... be run over by someone else and/or lose its identity. The Jewish people sure has a strong belief in itself, and they're still here after more than 2000 years, thank God, although it didn't look so good for them during most of that time.
