Scalise was being a disingenuous prick by making it about him. The bill was not asking him to personally apologize. The bill was asking the GOVERNMENT of his state to apologize for that government's policies during the slavery era.

Eventually, the paper managed to wring a statement of “regret” from him...

...in 2004, two years after he spoke at David Duke’s convention, he voted against making Martin Luther King Day a state holiday.
