The "natural born citizen" clause was an exclusionary clause apparently inserted at he "last minute" at the suggestion of George Washington who in turn received the suggestion by John Jay;
On July 25, 1787, John Jay wrote to George Washington, presiding officer of the Convention: From Wiki...

So the framers included the phrase without defining it. Some say it's because the meaning was obvious through Vattel who most of them seem to be very familiar with. Whatever the case the clause was meant as an extra layer of protection against foreign influence on the executive. It's ironic that the strict constitutionalists (a la Cruz) are the ones trying to diminish the import of this clause. The definitions they are coming up with are so broad and wide just about any American citizen is eligible to be Prez. Now I'm not, as a foreign observer, a strict constructionist, I lean towards the living interpretation of its format. Those who claim to be strict constructionists and argue that a person born in a foreign country to a cuban father attains "natural born citizen" status solely on the reasoning that his mother was an American citizen are watering down the exclusionary intent of the framers to the point where it becomes almost meaningless. This is the kind of thing we "living constitutionalists" are accused of all the time.
