Interesting article on "Rule 9" from the RNC: Donald Trump Dropping Out Scenarios: What Would Happen Next?
...the rules allow Republicans two choices if Trump steps aside or is forced aside: They can reconvene their convention and have the delegates vote again or the replacement choice would be made by “the 168-member committee” of the RNC.

That committee “could decide with each member getting a portion of votes based on the population of the state they represent. Number 2 seems like a more likely scenario,” reports Lawnewsz.

That means 168 high-level Republican party officials would possibly be choosing a new nominee.

The way I understand it is, Trump has to voluntarily step down. Then the RNC convenes to select a new candidate. The procedure is pretty simple. However, there are pitfalls.

One major pitfall would be giving the impression that they were hand-picking one of their favorites instead of just giving the nod to the next guy in line from the original vote from the People in the primaries. Especially with their rebellious base members. Anything less would be seen as a coup and then Hillary of course would win.

What isn't clear is how votes would be cast for a new candidate? Do the ones for Trump already cast in early ballots go to the new guy? Maybe if Trump asks that they do? Do you write in Kasich on the ballot? Or would a vote for Trump go to his "next of kin"?

Cruz of course can't be nominated because of where he was born (Canada) and only renounced citizenship in 2014. Some pesky regulation in the US Constitution that says a president has to be born American.

Anyone have thoughts on where the already-Trump cast votes would go and how to vote on regular ballots which are already printed with "Trump" as the GOP nominee?
