I think Strolling is addressing the broader issue of immigrant brides marrying wealthy Americans. It isnt just about money. Women are, most of them, attractied to strong men who can protect them and their children. It is genetic.

Plus, imagine you grew up in some backwater country in Europe or the Third world and heard a lot of things about America your whole life, and suddenly someone from that great country who is a success there and respected comes to your little country and just notices here and then befriends her. I think it is unreasonable to argue that she should have a will of iron and dismiss his offers of conversattion and friendship.

I don't know them personally so can't speak to their true motives. Rich men do attract beautiful women, it's weird to single her out especially since she was hardly desperate.
